Learn to Read Car and Body Language
Over the years I have kept my nose clean and avoided a few collisions by watching the actions of the drivers around me and the seemingly trivial movements their vehicles might make. When the operator of a larger motor vehicle decides to cut me off because - (A) He doesn’t see me or (B) he is an idiot - I’m usually one step ahead of him.
You should be especially alert when coming to an intersection where vehicles traveling in the opposite direction are attempting to make a left hand turn. This is where motorcycle accidents involving cars occur so slow down or cover your breaks. If you are alert you can usually tell when a driver is getting antsy and may cut you off.
When approaching a vehicle from behind or the side watch the driver. If he’s checking his mirrors fast and often he’s probably preparing to make a last second decision that could cause you harm. Your natural instinct is to steer in the direction of which you are looking. If a vehicle makes a slight move towards your lane the driver is probably looking to make a lane change and will continue going in that direction. Take immediate evasive action and get out of the way.
