amazing treasures found in books
One of my favorite aspects of summer is the proliferation of sales. Yard sales, garage sales, estate sales, and auctions are wonderful opportunities to obtain even more stuff that you simply cannot afford to pass up. Hey, this box of goodies is so cheap I just have to have it!
I’m always looking for more books. Sometimes I buy them for the things that have been left inside them. Old postcards. Photos. Announcements of births, marriages, funerals, parties. I have even found money that somebody stashed long ago in a book. They probably forgot about it. Or died. When my grandmother passed on they found all kinds of stuff that she had squirreled away in various places.
Alexis Larsen pointed out a fascinating post about the amazing things that have been found in books. To read the article click here.
Amazing treasures are often concealed inside books. Have you ever found something special hidden away inside a book? What was it?

What a lovely paragraph Vick-mon! I can almost smell the flowers. I think prose was quite correct with the poetic assessment of you.By victor mickunas

Quite often I will open old books and find pressed flowers and leaves within. I always wonder about the stories that these bits of nature represent. Are these blossoms all that remains of some love that burned 100 years ago? Are these leaves from some tree that is now extinct? Those blooms still have the slightest blush of color - an echo of the blush that once bloomed in the excitement of those young lovers so long ago..By lmj

Part 2. Our local library had a display in April, of items that had been left in library books - as bookmarks. The librarian put up the sanitized and legal version of things like a CLEAN q-tip. They didn’t put up the marijuana leaves.By lmj

A few years ago I found a credit card receipt in a book with all the information (name, address, phone number, complete charge number with expiration date) I would have needed to do the woman harm. I was glad I am honest. The greatest treasure I ever found was when I decided to clean out some of my own books - most of which were acquired through Goodwill, garage sales, library sales, etc. I had two copies of Erma Bombeck’s “At Wits End”. My initial thought was to keep the hardback copy rather than the paperback. Fortunately, I opened the paperback and discovered, it was signed by Erma Bombeck. It was signed “to Sue” so my youngest sister teases me that it should be hers. She can have it after I’m gone.
