Joose Box ready for round one at Canal Street

The Canal Street Tavern Dayton Band Playoffs are the nation’s longest running local band competition. Band’s go head-to-head in a summer-long tournament style music event where fans vote to decide who advances.

Local piano-pop-rock group Joose Box hopes to be one of those bands who advance.

Joose Box will perform along with Medway, Ohio’s Electric Smoke in round one of the DBP this Thursday, June 5th at Canal Street Tavern.

Joose Box is Eric “Goose” Geise on the keyboard and Josh Eckley on the drums. They are old high school friends who began JB last year with the piano at the center of the band’s music.

“In the beginning we started out as a guitar and drum tandem and would play a lot of college parties and local bars just jamming out,” said Eckley. “But after a single jam session with the piano in early ‘07, we fell in love with the sound and kept with it.”

The band has a big sound despite being just a two-piece. They take Ben Folds piano-pop out of the stuffy and soft “suburbs” and allow it to rock out.

“Rolling Stone magazine describes new bands with a formula and we think ours would be Ben Folds x Arctic Monkeys + a bicycle built for two = The Joose Box,” said Eckley.

The band is looking forward to playing the Playoffs for the first time.

“We’ve played at Canal Street a few times and Mick and the staff have said they like our set and seem to think we got a real good shot at doing well in the Playoffs,” said Eckley. “So we just thought why not let’s play. This is a great opportunity to get our music out there.”
