County pay - Environmental Services

Butler County commissioners froze pay increases for county employees yesterday. Read the story here.

I happen to have the pay of employees in Environmental Services laying around, along with their job titles and start dates. You can read that below at EnviroSvcs.htm.

Do you think this is on par with the private sector?

I’m glad you have the pay for Environmental Services. Your question was, are these pay rates in line with the private sector? Maybe, maybe not. But they shouldn’t be. Most of the Environmental Services employees have continued their education beyond High School and have Water and/or Wastewater licenses from the State of Ohio.Many of them have college degrees. Many of them have other specialized certifications. The average person in the private sector has none of this and could care less if they ever get it.So let’s give credit where credit is due and give these employees the credit they deserve for all their extra educational efforts that give them the knowledge and skills to perform their jobs at the highest level. Great Job Environmental Services Staff!!

One can’t help but notice the superfluous and redundant management positions when looking at the attached file. How many managers/supervisors are needed for Customer Care when this has been outsourced to Cincinnati?? Customer Care Manager, Utility Accounts Manager and Customer Serv Tech Supervisor. Over $230,000 in management salaries for this one deparment. One supervisor would seem sufficient for the Customer Serv Tech’s.

Community Outreach Coor/Grant Admin, PR Coor, Environmental Educator, Solid Waste Dist Coor, SPC PRJ Coor and Environmental Specialist (3), combine for $541,000 of management salary. This seems like an excess of PR related money for one deparment.

There is also a Field Operations Manager and Field Supt that combine for $183,000 per year. How much supervision is needed for the field employees? Assuming each department has a direct supervisor as it appears they do in the title desciptions.

If poster’s had avatars, then Sparky’s would be wrapped in an American flag. Please, professional positions everywhere often require degrees, and obviously at BCES too. Though, if larger, disparate amounts of money are paid to those with irrelevant degrees, let alone without relevant experience - which is likely here, then that’s wasteful. Observer nailed roles of concern well including the Utility Accounts Mgr – a Fox “friend” who was moved in with no relevant, formal experience. HR should be consolidated under the county’s control. Overall, absent other information, BCES’s management appears top heavy and likely should be led by fewer. And, it’s more than likely that all of the county’s customer service positions could be consolidated under one umbrella, with one number to call for all. Deeper service inquiries could still be dealt with promptly and appropriately. Please share more salary history’s, org charts, etc. as this is great info.

Observer: One problem with your “observations” titles don’t spell out exact job duties and I know for a fact that all the jobs you have lumped as “PR” related are not. So please do not “assume” you know what you are talking about rather than “observe” - get your facts straight and then post.

OnAWhim (null) - You raise a valid point that others have already admittedly shared; that a lack of factual, detailed information is hindering the overall discussion. So, since you allegedly know some facts, then why not enlighten us all with what you apparently know to improve it. Else, your comments serve as only more whines from yet another insider who wants to preserve a system that frankly, appears flawed. And, given what’s been shared to date, it looks like county leaders abandoned their fiduciary responsibilities to taxpayers to better serve their own needs and pockets first.

Willing to learn: The only PR job is the PR Coord. Two of the jobs lumped by Observer are paid by a grant from the state - not Environmental Svcs.,two are related to Engineering and the last is an educator for environmental programs in our schools. No whining - just facts.

Why is no one questioning the number of “top dogs” and the cost to staff those positions? If you add the salaries of the Director, Deputy Director and two Division Heads, including benefits, it is well over $500,000. The other county agencies operate with a director and deputy director. There is no need for division heads. Did anyone happen to notice that these folks are paid a disproportionately higher wage than the directors/deputy directors of other county agencies?
