Daytona 500: Penske’s “effort equals results”

The long-standing motto of Penske Racing: “Effort Equals Results.”

And if you’ve ever met Roger Penske and watched him operate, well, you know he’s a tireless worker who always gives great effort.

Penske’s reward came Sunday night when his drivers, Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch, swept to a 1-2 finish in the Great American Race, the Daytona 500.

Penske, who is Mr. Indy 500, can now be proclaimed as Mr. Daytona 500.

You knew, just knew, Home Depot stud driver Tony Stewart didn’t have enough tiger in his tank to win, even though he held the lead going into the final lap. Stewart stayed high, but couldn’t hold off Newman, who got pushed to the lead by Busch’s draft.

Newman, the driver of Penske’s No. 12 Alltel Dodge Charger, was making his seventh Daytona 500 start. He had one top-five and one top-10 finish entering Sunday. Now he’s got a No. 1.

Man, I loved the race, despite the late start and under-the-lights finish. What I hated, as usual, were the cautions. Had Dale Earnhardt Jr. managed his pit stops better, he’d be in Victory Lane, holding the checkered flag and guzzling champagne.

Coulda. Shoulda. Woulda.

Yep. That’s racin’.
