Marshall sophomore Juwan Staten commits to UD Flyers
Juwan Staten, an electrifying sophomore point guard at Thurgood Marshall High School in Dayton, has given a verbal commitment to continue his basketball career at the University of Dayton.
Staten will make a formal announcement at a news conference at Marshall High School on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 12:30 p.m.
Staten took unofficial visits to Cincinnati, Dayton, Indiana, Ohio State, and Xavier, with UD and XU coming through with early offers. Staten decided to flash a stop sign at the recruiting barrage and stay home.
He’ll be a freshman Flyer for the 2010-11 season after graduating from Marshall in 2010.
“It’s such a mature decision,” Marshall Athletic Director Carolyn Woodley told me on the telephone. “He went through an entire thought process, considering all the schools who were recruiting him and where he’d fit in.
“He’s only a sophomore,” Woodley added, “but he’s a mature young man, and on the basketball court, he’s very savvy. He wanted to give a verbal commitment now, and be freed up from all the calls and visits from recruiters so he can deal with the rest of his high school career.”
Staten, a 5-foot-9, 160-pounder, is one of the top prospects in Ohio. He’s a quick, explosive floor general, and an outstanding shooter and passer, who only needs to gain more strength to be a complete player.
He played for the All-Ohio Red AAU squad. His father, Billy Staten, coaches the Marshall Cougars.

I can assure you it doesn’t matter if Coach Gregory has a monopoly on local talent, if it is not producing “W” it doesn’t matter. For those of you that have a minute, check this year’s top 25 teams and notice very few of these squads are made up of local products. My point, recruit the best players, period, and do not be attracted to local talent for the story - especially when Dayton Ohio is not what I’d call a breeding ground for top hoops players. The players they received, with the exception of Wright and Staten aren’t necessarily tier 1 prospects.By john
