Bengals’ Dream Draft (plus two ‘Chris’ tales)
===LUDWIG AT LARGE salutes Beavercreek’s Joe Von Holle, the most intelligent, insightful and passionate football aficionado I know. Smokin’ Joe, whose nickname is “VoHo,” is an engineering consultant at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, working for Alion Science. He spent 23 years in the USAF and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He coached 10 years (non-pay) at the elementary and junior high school levels, including a stint as defensive coordinator for the seventh and eighth grade club teams at Carroll High School.
“My father, AE Von Holle, was head football coach at Xavier High School in Cincinnati and the freshman football coach at XU under Eddie Biles (he recruited and coached Danny Abramowicz). He also ran a summer clinic a couple of years with a guy named Ara Parseghian. My dad was the source of my love for the game and for much of my foundational knowledge.”===

ON THE LOOKOUT
Dayton Daily News copy editor Joe Cunningham, former Bengals beat writer for the Dayton Daily News, alerted me to this item on former Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry.

Cowboys aren’t buying Henry’s act
Posted: Friday April 11, 2008 (6:55AM ET)
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday that acquiring recently released Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, who was a college teammate of Pacman Jones at West Virginia, is “unlikely.”
Henry apparently is trying to go the “Pacman” route, too. He has contacted former Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin about potentially appearing on his radio show. Jones made a nearly three-hour appearance on the Irvin show two weeks ago to talk about his troubled past and Henry could be trying to use the same platform to explain his past behaviors.

It should be placed in every player’s stall in the Cincinnati Bengals locker room:

CHICK LUDWIG TRIVIA
As a kid growing up in the Price Hill section of Cincinnati, my dream was to become the next Chris Schenkel. I never missed an ABC-TV telecast of the college football game of the week, featuring Schenkel as the play-by-play man, former Oklahoma Sooners coach Bud Wilkinson as the color analyst and Bill Fleming on the sidelines. Remember the pre-game player introductions on the field? Priceless memories.

UNTIL NEXT TIME…

If that ended up being the Bengals draft I might quit being a fan. Where do you get this stuff? Why in the world do we need not one but two LT’s? And why waste the #9 pick on one when we clearly need help on D?By Larry

It’s hilarious to read some nerd sportswriter call himself the Chickster and pretend to know anything about football. You are starting to remind me of a former DDN sportswriting loser named Gary Nuhn…By Red

Man Chickster….what is going on? You used to make sense….I think this blogging thing has gone to your head….first you say the Brian Gregory is gone, something you had to know wasn’t true and now garbage like this? Gary Nuhn is a good comparison, keep it up and you’ll make us forget him.By Brian

Chick, I know Levi Jones was doing his best Rod Jones impersonation throughout much of last season, but is his knee really that far gone? Drafting a left tackle instead of defense signals outright rebuilding in my mind, because the Bengals’ defense can’t stop ANYBODY. I’m sick and tired of dreading our “high-powered offense” scoring too soon for fear of putting the defense back on the field to give the score right back up. If they draft a LT at #9 it amounts to Marvin leaving a gift to his successor, plain and simple.By Proud UD Grad

I would like to see the Bengals take Kevin Hoyng in a late round. Interest has been building for Kevin, if the Bengals do not draft him, he may get away to another team, maybe even the Steelers!By Doco

A “Dream Draft” would be 1. Dorsey, 2. Gholston, 3a. Ellis, 3b. Mendenhall, 4. Jake Long, etc… That’s my dream. Reallistically I pray we don’t go O-Line in the first 3 picks.By Ryan

I agree with Geoff, that would be a horrible draft. Why would we want to lock up that much more money on our O-Line? I need to find a different beat writer, this as amateur hour at best!By Mike

If we draft a left tackle, wide receiver, cornerback or running back not named Darren McFadden, my television is in trouble of being seriously damaged. DT, LB, DE 3 biggest needs…in that order. There are plenty of solid candidates that play those positions. Your continued suggestion that we draft an offensive tackle is ridiculous. We have 4 solid guys who can play tackle on our roster…Stacy, Levi, Willie and Whitworth. We can get one later…or even a guard if we kick Whitworth over to tackle. You are driving your readers nuts and sounding like Hobson, which, if you don’t realize it, is not a good thing for a sports writer.By Ryan

Anthony Collins will not be around when it’s time for the Bengal’s 7th selection. Also… why are we taking a tackle at 9 when Whitworth and Andrews have our backup tackle spots covered?By Ryan

I think everyone puts too much emphasis on defense. The best defense is a dominating offense. If the other team can’t get the ball, you don’t have to worry about defending against them. An average defense can get the job done if your offense controls the game.By Fabio

I like Red Bryant from Texas A&M and would love to see him play for the Bengals. If you’re a real Bengals fan you should check him out and hope we pick him up in the later rounds. Also I would trade out of the first round if Ellis isn’t their.By Fabio

I understand Geoff’s comments but, in mho, I think Dorsey and Ellis are both gone by #9 and that Rivers, Merling, Harvey and Balmer don’t have the value of Chris Williams. Plus Levi’s been having knee problems and Stacey’s acting like he’s opting for FA next year. Also, a second LT isn’t necessarily for that position — LT’s tend to be the smartest/most athletic players on the line and a college LT can project to many OL positions. Just playing through the probabilities of who’s on the board and guess who might work out well for the Bengals.
