Can Bengals capture Queen City from Reds fans?
BENGALS OR REDS?
LET DEBATE BEGIN!
LUDWIG AT LARGE has two questions for loyal readers.
The first: With the Cincinnati Reds struggling mightily in the NL Central Division, can the Cincinnati Bengals recapture the city like they they did in 2005 when they finished 11-5 and scored their first playoff berth since the 1990 season?
The Bengals had a golden opportunity to win over Ohio during the Cleveland Browns’ three-year hiatus (1996-98), but the Bengals blew it with records of 8-8, 7-9 and 3-13.
Now that the Browns are back, the Bengals can forget about winning the state. But the door is definitely open to winning over the Queen City.
The second: If you had to make a choice with $59 in your pocket, would you spend it on ONE Bengals ticket (59 bucks is the cheapest seat at Paul Brown Stadium in the north end zone club level and corner canopy level) OR would you spend it on THREE Reds tickets ($19 each in the terrace outfield) at Great American Ball Park.
Remember: There are 81 Reds home games, and only 10 Bengals home games (2 preseason, 8 regular season).

The year was 1990 and President George Bush declares war on Iraq. It was the first George Bush and the first war on Iraq. That was the same year that Nelson Mandella was freed from prison and Noriega surrenered to American forces. Coincendentially that was the same year that the Bengals won their last playoff game. Ironically that was the year that Paul Brown died and his son Mike was all alone to run the team as he saw fit. Since the death of Paul Brown, the Bengals have a record of 97 wins and 175 losses yet they continue to do things the same way. They have the smallest scouting department in the league, and of the few scouts that they have, many have the last nave of Brown. Every few years they fire their puppet, i mean head coach and bring in a new poor sap. Each one of them preach the Mike brown gospel of building through the draft and not spending money on free agents. Yet the first three drafts under Marvin Marvin Lewis have only netted three starters on the current roster, six backups and eighteen players that are playing elsewhere or are out of the league in general. This is the time where those players should be entering their prime. Of the five drafts that Mavrin has overseen so far they have only yeilded one Pro bowl player and that was the can’t miss No.1 overall pick of Carson Palmer. Last year Dallas had thirteen pro bowlers, ten of which were their own draft picks. The problem isn’t Mr. Lewis, it’s Mr. Brown. He tries to get too cute with his drafts and select the diamond in the rough that other teams have rated as lower round prospects. Mike loves to go against what the experts say. In the 2004 draft we needed defensive players and instead of taking Vince WIlfork or Marcus Tubbs, two probowl Defensive Tackles that were rated as steals the time, they trade down a few spots and take Chris Perry who is undersized and had injury concerns. The highest rated runningback on the board when they came up at the 17th pick was future probowler Steven Jackson. One is injured every year and can’t get on the field and the other is Steven Jackson. Every year Bengals fans have hope for the coming season, but our day will never come. The Brown family is the equivelant of a mom and pop coner store trying to put Wal-mart out of business. You’ll root for the underdog, but in the end you always know who’s going to win.By RavensRockNorth

The league should force Mike Brown to sell the Bengals. He cannot afford to own an NFL team. Plain and simple. He got not money of his own. The only other team without a high rolling own is the Green Bay Packers and they are a special case. Brown must go.By Steven Ross

NFL should put a limit on losing seasons. Once you reach ten, the league steps in and runs the show. At least the Reds have an owner who wants to win.By reggie98ud

Not a snowball’s chance in HELL! The Reds are the original Major League Baseball team and have been around for about 120 years. the Reds have won several World Series and are now struggling in a league with a do nothing comissioner that allows an unfair playing field with teams like the Spankees spending $130 mil/year on salaries. The Bungles, on the other hand have the lusury of a salary cap and rules that encourage parity in the league. The Packers (to use a prior example)went from 10-6 to 4-12 to 13-3 in 4 years, but the Bungles always suck? Even the Browns have figured out how to win (although they may have screwed it up by not staying with Anderson). That is why the Bungles will not take over Cincinnati from the Reds.By Derrick

Yep. The buckeyes. That’s something to be proud of. Want anymore of the SEC? Didnt think so. They’re a 7-5 program in the SEC. As far as who’s town it is, it’s nobody’s. Nobody has earned it in the last ten years. Show me which one has earned my hard earned dollar. Give me a couple rounds at Lassing Pointe for that money instead.By Greg

First off, Mike Brown is not Paul Brown. We know it. He knows it. He needs to hire a GM that knows something about Football. Let Marvin just coach. The rest of the problems will work themselves out. Note to Mike Brown: Stop screwing up OUR football team!!!!!By Bio major

I love our Bengals. They play a real game. Baseball players just are not real athletes compared to Football players. I could care less if the Reds won the pennant and won the World Series. I am 38 years old, if the Bengals win the Super Bowl in my life time it would be the equivalent of the Reds winning a 100 World Series. We have Carson Palmer as our quarterback, as long as he has a strong supporting cast, the Bengals will have a chance. It doesn’t matter what last year’s record was or our record many years ago. Who would have thought the Giants would have won the Super Bowl this past year? Be sour all you want, I love our Bengals!!!!By Matt Th

The cheapest Reds ticket is $7, NOT $19, so one could attend EIGHT Reds games for the price of the cheapest Bengals ticket. It certainly would be nice for Ludwig to do a bit more research on Reds ticket pricing before asking such a hypothetical question (or did he give misleading info on purpose to create a bias toward the Bengals?)By Andrew

I’m sick of the Bengals. I will never spend another dime on this team or root for them ever again. At least the Reds run a class organization, something the Bengals can not claim.By Fred

Bengals- cheezy little flea market team with a moron for an owner. WLW after each game is the real entertainment, listening to Bengals fans whining and making excuses about why they should have won and arguing about what player lost the game for them. That’s entertainment!By RJ

I’m tired. Last week I got my final bill for the Bengals season tickets. Over $700 each, and for what? Promises, promises, promises. I used to be a Marvin believer, but now I’m not so sure. With the exception of the one playoff year, it’s more of the same every year. I don’t especially like baseball, so where do I go? One thing is for sure…this losing year after year has worn me down to the point that giving up the tickets is a distinct possibility. How much can one take?By RJ

I’m begining to regret my Bengals tattoo I got while still in the military. I was hoping that 15+ years of loosing would have been over by the time I retired from the Army. Apparently not! Mike Brown needs to give the team over to his daughter and allow her to fix this thing. Maybe football genius skips a generation…By Stan Fleming

they bengals were my first love. i started watching them during the 88-89 season. ever since then they’ve it’s been disappointment after disappointment. i no longer have any faith in this team because of our owner. mike brown is a cheap moron! he screwed of us bengal fans for way too long and even though i’ll always be a bengals fan i just don’t think i can be optimistic about this team’s future at all. as far as the reds go, they are struggling right now but they have an owner who wants to win badly and i do beleive he will bring the reds back to respectability within the next couple years. go reds!By jay

if the bengals win in the playoffs and subsequently a super bowl, ohio is theirs. we all know the browns will never deliver on that.
