Scrimmage stars: WRs Simpson & Chatman, LB Brandon Johnson
OFFENSE HAD ITS MOMENTS
BUT DEFENSE SHINES BRIGHT
The defense captured a 44-27 victory over the offense in the Bengals’ Intrasquad Scrimmage in front of 7,100 spectators at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown, Ky., on Friday night.
HIGHLIGHTS:
—-Rookie wide receiver Jerome Simpson caught a 43-yard touchdown from backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Simpson released off the line of scrimmage, blew down the right sideline, got a step on cornerback Deltha O’Neal, made a diving catch of Fitzpatrick’s throw at the 3-yard line and skidded into the end zone as the referee raised his arms for a TD.
—-Starting quarterback Carson Palmer fired a 21-yard TD pass to veteran wide receiver Antonio Chatman, who slipped past cornerback Leon Hall and made a diving catch in the right corner of the end zone.
—-Tailback Chris Perry was extremely active, carrying 10 times for 33 yards to go with three catches for 17 yards.
—-Linebacker Brandon Johnson, defensive tackle Michael Myers, cornerback Simeon Castille and free safety Corey Lynch were the defensive stars.
Myers sacked Fitzpatrick twice; Castille sacked quarterback Jordan Palmer; and Brandon Johnson was all over the field, piling up four tackles and blowing up several plays.
Jordan Palmer tossed a 10-yard TD pass to tight end Matt Sherry, but Lynch picked off a Jordan Palmer pass in the end zone on the final play of the scrimmage.
Kicker Shayne Graham converted 4 of 6 field goals. He missed from 35 and 46 yards (both wide right), but made good on kicks from 30, 40, 48 and 52 yards.
