To Charlotte (N.C.), with love
DEAR AUNT SUSAN:
WISH YOU WERE HERE
Susan Pearson, of Charlotte, N.C., sure is proud of her nephew — Bengals outside linebacker Jim Maxwell.
Maxwell — a fifth-year veteran from Gardner-Webb — had two solo tackles, an interception, and he swatted away another pass in the Bengals’ Black-Orange Mock Game on Saturday.
Maxwell picked off quarterback Jeff Rowe and rumbled nine yards to the 11. He set the table for what should’ve been an easy score. But two holding penalties and a sack eventually pushed the ball back to the 30-yard line, and Shayne Graham missed a 48-yard field goal attempt wide right.
“Our defense had a rough first drive (13 plays that Graham finished with a 21-yard field goal),” Maxwell said. “We were kind of frustrated. So it was good to have a momentum change for a change.”
The defense started out in man coverage on the play, but “switched it off,” Maxwell said. “The receiver (Antonio Chatman) saw me switch off and he stopped. The quarterback didn’t see it and threw it right to me.”
Nice gift, huh?
“You’ve just got to catch those and keep going,” he said.
Maxwell is a journeyman who has played in 36 career games with the Giants, 49ers, Dolphins and Bengals, He has an excellent shot at making the squad if he excels on special teams.
IN JIM’S WORDS:
“In my position, it’s been a fight for a job on the team everywhere I’ve been. Special teams is important. Being able to play linebacker is important. I really view both of them as equally important because they won’t keep you on the roster for one if you can’t do the other.
“Every practice is always big, especially the scrimmage and mock game. It’s a chance to showcase your talent. You never know what can happen with injuries or anything down the road. Anything can happen, so the more chances you get, the better.”
