By their own admission, this facility will release 2,800 TONS of particulate per year. That’s 5,600,000 POUNDS! To paraphrase Shakespear, this is Much ado about Something!

This new plant will be a state-of-the-art facility, people. I think that most of you ‘protest too much’! Middletown needs these jobs. Far too many jobs have been lost to businesses that have closed over the past 10-20 years anyway. The old Raymond Bag plant is smack in the middle of a residential area … and everyone in that area of town co-existed very nicely. What’s the issue? That plat of land is plenty large enough to support this new coke plant and won’t be a problem for anyone.

why not move Garden Manor to the old Hospital, that way its stays in Middletown? Just a thought, its a shame to let it go to waste anyways.

i think its funny that so many of you bash mr. schiavone, he is only trying to do what is right. i am willing to bet that none of you that are making comments on here live by the ground zero site or even the AK plant. so do you think you are educated enough to comment on such an issue. WAKE UP MIDDLETOWN YOU JUST LOST EVERYTHING!!

Its not like Garden Manor is the best place to send a loved one anyway, right? Move them to Mt pleasant, its better there anyway.

Come on, Garden Manor… it isn’t like Middletown is wanting to put the coke plant in your courtyard. We need this plant, and the jobs and income that comes along with it. Shane Craycraft’s threat sounds like the adult version of “I’ll take my ball and go home”!!! Grow up!

To the idiots who think the average wage at Garden Manor is $8.00 an hour: Get a clue!! For a facility that has 350 beds that is run 24 hrs a day, that’s a helluva alot of RNs and LPNs that make $40K to $50K per year. Garden Manor has eight nursing stations plus a 3 floor assisted living home. They probably have 30 to 40 full time nurses in addition to rehab employees, maintenance (just like AK maintenance), dietary specialists. Hey AK hacks, you aren’t the only people who make a decent wage!!

Slam dunk, time is just for show. 6-0 across board property rezoned for commercial, and SunCoke off to he races. Hunter complained about Fenwick, but once Fenwick was bult, gee, it wasn’t so bad after all. Same with this plant. As Shakespeare said, “Much Ado About Nothing.” Schiavone and a few residents concerned about inability to sell their house. In Middletown, every property owner seeing property today worth less than it was in 1987, so you homestly think council isn’t going to pass this?

yaa for poverty wage nursing home jobs,I doubt the owner of garden manor will close his money making nursing home.this new coke plant insures that ak will be commited to this area for a long time,ak vs garden manor = bye bye garden manor

What is wrong with people? We need more jobs. The coke plant can be a God send for the unemployed.
I can’t see why Garden Manor has to move. The residents there are mostly housebound so what problem is that going to cause.

In one article Mr lawyer states the lowering of his property value. He states one as appraisal value and one as market value. Which makes it look like the value loss is more than it actully is. Market value and appraisal value are completely different. Lawyer double talk.

Middletown is so desperate for jobs they will put anything anywhere and hurt anybody doing it. I’ve never heard such class envy. Schiavone worked hard, went to school, unlike many of you, to better himself. The family is well respected in town and has provided jobs for years. Middletown’s the worst area I’ve ever seen for class envy. Why do you think so many good jobs have left town. These people don’t want to and don’t have to hear your crap. This plant can be put elsewhere. Work together!

Lets see, Middletown gains approximately 80 jobs estimated to be $65,000 per year each. That comes to a figure of approximately 5.2 million in wages resulting in income taxes for the city of $91,000. Garden Manor closing will cost 400 jobs. Not knowing the average yearly income of those jobs but using $8 per hour as a base figure, that results in annual wages of 6.656 million or $116,480 in taxes. By these estimates the city stands to loose at least $25,480 in tax moneys. Wake up council!

AMANDA SCHOOL, RESIDENTAL NEIGHBORHOODS, SO ON, & SO ON! SO MANY STUBBORN, MATERIALISTIC PEOPLE AND NOT ENOUGH IDEALISTIC PEOPLE.. WHAT A SHAME! APPROVE THE ZONING, COUNCIL MEMBERS! YOU ALREADY LOST AK’S HEADQUARTERS. THE PLANT MIGHT AS WELL PACK UP THEIR COILS AND MOVE TOO! AND THEN WHAT?? MIDDLETOWN WOULD BE A SHELL OF A CITY THEN!

The homes next to AK now were built there AFTER AK. They knew AK was there when they purchased their home. The homes they want to put the new coke plant next to & Garden Manor have been there for years. It seems unfair to ask those people to just accept something as big & ugly and messy as a coke plant and are expected to be OK with it.

Why not put it inside the AK fence where it won’t cause traffic problems for everyone with MORE trains running back and forth and STOPPING all the time and holding up traffic??? AND next to a nursing home??? You’ve got to be kidding me!?!?!?!?!?

Look, in this economy, our entire area will benefit from this new plant, and it will insure that AK will remain here for many years to come. This may be one of the last opportunities City Council has to actually bring some hope and life to Middletown, and they need to realize that. The people complaining are not even tax paying citizens in Middletown! All surrounding areas will benefit from the increase in revenue! Stop being so short sighted!! We need this NOW!

U know now all you people want to complain about the new coke plant AK is going to put up.let me ask you, how long has AK been in Middletown? Your only complaining now for most of you because its going to be closer to your homes, but let me tell you all those houses around AK now have been there for years. so get over it! The coke plant is going to do a good deed and bring jobs to middletown, and thats what we need. Also its not like they didnt put in a huge air cleaning machine, because they did

AK steel has had several years head start on this coke plant project. Why the rush to push this zone change through? Why not a face to face with council and all parties concerned? I think there is more land available for this project than just this one parcel, including land inside their own fence. Four hundred jobs versus eighty. Lose of taxes. Huge tax breaks for SunCoke. Make it work for everyone, not just AK.

It should be built in the Industrial Park - not a residential area. Let them access it from Yankee Rd..not Rt 4! Let it be next to another business - not homes. Mr. Schiavone has worked hard to provide for his family just like all the other residents in the area have. Everyone has the chance to better themselves and make better money….he took those steps so lets not judge him and the other residents on trying to preserve their homes and health.

I bet ol’ Frankie wouldn’t be complaining too much if it were being turned into a golf course with an elitist, er I mean a luxury country club. Unless, of course, if Mr. Martin tried to file an emergency injunction to keep that from happening. Because, heaven forbid that someone else, other than Frank, should be allowed to make any money.

I’m glad you’re able to still sell your property for $200,000! In today’s economy, when so many are foreclosing on their homes and homeless shelters are almost always full, sell your land, move, allow Middletown to grow and praise God you were still able to sell and make so much money!

Everyone knows it will be dirty and smelly. Better than the current one I am sure, but still a coke plant! Traffic will be a nighmare. The noise & trains will be a nuisance. would you place a loved one at Gardon Manor if there was a coke plant directly behind it? I certainly would not.

I like the PR picture of Schiavone with the eyes closed.Impressive! We need the jobs and hundreds more like them to stimulate this town. The site is close to an industrial park isn’t it?Why wouldn’t one think that perhaps, one day,the land would be developed further? As to pollution-we still don’t know about the impact from this new technology,do we?That info.hasn’t been presented clearly as yet. Garden Manor may be overreacting on leaving. They don’t know as yet what the impact will be.No one does
