February is Pet Dental Health month
Did you know there was such a thing as Pet Dental Health month? Well, there is and February is the month. Granted, February is almost over, but I still wanted to bring it to your attention.
It was started to bring awareness to the dental health of our pets.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, more than 85% of dogs and cats that are at least 4 years old have periodontal disease. Just like in humans, the way to avoid that is to brush your pet’s teeth.
I admit I don’t brush my dogs’ teeth, but I do give them Nylabones and other toys that are supposed to help remove some of the plaque and tartar. Hannah, my 4-year-old dog, has some yellowing, but really not too much considering I don’t brush her teeth. Lexi is 2-1/2 and her teeth are still bright white. But my dogs are very aggressive chewers and love their Nylabones, so they chew on them a lot.
If I start brushing their teeth, it will be teaching old dogs new tricks. They don’t even really like it when I just pull their cheeks back to check on their teeth, let alone sticking my finger in their mouth to brush their teeth. It may be as much trauma as nail clipping! But maybe not if the toothpaste tastes like liver. Ick.
