Now that’s a great idea — a state board of ed blog
![]()
(Haverkos and Grady’s cartoon likenesses)
I think this is pretty cool. Susan Haverkos, a state board of education member who represents about half of the Miami Valley, an her board colleague Colleen Grady have launched a blog where they will write about state board business and statewide education issues.
I don’t know why more elected officials haven’t started blogs. It’s a great way to communicate your message and interact with the voters who elected you.
I just have one complaint about the Haverkos/Grady site. Ladies, when you cite another blog, whether your are complaining about it or praising it, the custom online is to link to the post in question. They have a post up that takes issue with my criticism of a state board press release that begged Ohio newspapers to give free advertising, saying the state cannot purchase ads due to “budget constraints.”
Or perhaps state board members are also unable to connect to Ohio newspaper blogs due to budget constraints?

Collen, I was mostly teasing, but I am disappointed to learn that others beat me to the punch. Welcome to the blogosphere!By Colleen Grady

Sorry Scott. While I did offer a comment on your blog about the story, yours wasn’t the story that launched our post. It was noted on more than a half a dozen sites including NPR and several political blogs. We’ll do a better job making sure to include all pertinent links.By Mary

I know Colleen, and she actually is pretty cool, but I am having a problem figuring out which cartoon likeness is Colleen. I have observed her testifying before the Ohio legislative committees on various education issues and spearheading other education endeavers before she was elected to the State Board of Education. That she helped launch such a blog does not surprise me at all. Good move.By Skeptic

“Or perhaps state board members are also unable to connect to Ohio newspaper blogs due to budget constraints?” Ha! You’re getting a little snarky on that one, Scott! Perhaps they did not want to dignify the negative comments by publishing the source? I see they linked to other publications on their blog, so they clearly know how to do that after all. Oh well, news rarely comes without controversy. You know you’ve truly arrived when you can cause panic at the Statehouse. Keep up the great work!
