Council members thoughts on budget cuts
Council held a work session on Friday, June 6, to discuss potential budget cuts and methods to get its general fund back into the black. Here are some quotes from that meeting.
“You have to be careful of what you’re doing by not shooting yourself in the foot.”
-Councilwoman Kathy Becker, saying that too many layoffs will impact the city’s income tax base.
“We have to decide if we’re going to be a city totally of public safety or a city that serves its citizens.”
-Councilman Archie Johnson, on not cutting the Human Relations department.
“Once government gets $8 million, it isn’t long before that $8 million is gone and then you can kiss that asset goodbye.”
-Councilman Ed Shelton, on why the city shouldn’t sell off its land, especially in the down real estate market, for a short-term cash influx.
“We’ve (already) cut parks and playgrounds and it was cut before we got into office. It’s already stripped.”
-Mayor Don Ryan, on why he’d like no further cuts in Parks and Recreation.
“(In government) you’ve got to talk something to death before you take action and we don’t have time to talk this to death.”
-Councilman Jim Noonan, on the need to act quickly because the matter was urgent.
