Eat at Mom’s while you can!
Brother Ron here…
Made a stop yesterday for lunch to an old Leadbelly favorite while the wife and I were cruising the back byways of Warren County with some friends… We hit Mom’s, in the village (hamlet? crossroads?) of Red Lion, at 741 and 122.
You remember Mom’s … about five years ago, the Leadbellies had breakfast there and rated it pretty high on our Yum-o-meter. It’s a classic old mom-n-pop nook populated by regulars and staffed by cheerful, hard-working coffee-slingin’ waitresses who remember the last time they saw you.
The food is mostly fried or flipped, and it’s good greasy fare of the sort that makes you want more. Burgers are basic and filling; the soup beans are a classic, served up with diced onion, hot peppers and a slab of cornbread; the veggie soup is really veggie beef, and they expect you do know it; everything on the breakfast menu is great.
The decor includes rows of coffee mugs along the walls, hundreds of them; UK paraphernalia of all sorts (the owner’s an alum, apparently); and — love this — dollar bills stapled to the ceiling on which fans have written notes of greeting and appreciation.
The bad news: Mom’s staff says they have been told by the state that a planned upgrade (um, whatever) of the complicated five-way stop on which the restaurant is located in the center of Red Lion will kill off the diner sometime in the next few years. They aren’t sure when, and are just going along for now.
I say: Why should a 20-plus-year business have to be closed down just for the driving convenience of a bunch of people who are just passing through anyway?
There are days when you wonder just we mean when we refer to progress.
Meantime, stop by Mom’s while you can! BTW: Cash only, no checks or cards.
Seeya there.

Mom’s is GREAT. I hope it finds a way to move to a new location so the restaurant doesn’t die. Next time try the omelets. They are unbelievable.By kathleen

I too have been to Bostons a few times thinking maybe the service will get better….it never does. The dark haired barmaid stnds behind the bar talking to her friends and drinking beer with them and ignores the patrons. We frequently have to go to her to get another round, while we sit at the bar, not at the tables, which have NO service at all! Service is no better when dave and his dog are there. And not sure why it is called a Bistro, they only have pizza. Never have I seen the pizza available during happy hour. Its just not a customer friendly atmosphere. It unfortunate. We started going to B-Dubs, the service is great even on busy nights, guys that work behind the bar know their customers and are quick with the refills.By Laura

Old subject but have to add my two cents worth. Saw the recommendation to try “C’s” in Huber Heights (in the Marions post) so hubby and I went last week. AWFUL! Tasted like a box Chef-boy-r-dee with Hormel pepperoni just baked in a real oven. Can’t believe anyone likes it, but then it was getting crowded with what looked like Little League players and families when we left.By David Olmstead

I recently went to the Boston Bistro this last friday for their happy hour beer and pizza based on your writeup in the GO section of the sunday paper. You gave them far to good a write up in my opinion. When I was there they had no pizza up. The beer selection was as good as usual. I inquired about the pizza and they said it was coming. In about 30 minutes one did show up. That was gone in minutes. An hour and a half later there was still not a pizza available for happy hour. I asked again and was told they only have 1 oven and when someone orders an individual pizza that gets cooked before the happy hour pizza. I never heard of a pizza oven so small it can only do 1 at at time. I would never recommend Boston Bistro for a happy hour function they simply don’t know how to do it nor do they seem to care. Also you mentioned that they had a new extended menu and there was a strip steak available. I looked at the menu and nowhere could I find strip steak. I believe it may have been a one time only just for the lead belly boys.By David Olmstead
