Belgian Bud!?!?!?!
Well, we all knew how this story would play out, once the initial headlines arose that the hostile takeover was in the works… Now, indeed, InBev, the company from Belgium that makes Stella and Beck’s, is taking over Anheuser-Busch.
Sooooo, do you beer drinkers out there think this is a good thing, or a bad thing? Does it even matter?
I mean, Stella Artois and Beck’s are definitely good products, and InBev seems pretty smart… Is this a case of a great American tradition getting sucked up by foreign money (did you hear about the Chrysler Building?) or is it a globalism-works-fine case of watery US beer about to get improved by smarter European tastes?
Weigh in here, please…

I started a blog to keep track of this horrible thing. http://belgianbud.com/ I know it doesn’t look pretty. But I’ll make it look more like this soon, http://belgianbud.blogspot.com/ We should take the top rated “rants” and mail them to the AB execs.By machiavelli

With the exception of first class craft beers like Great Lakes and Flat Tire, the big American breweries have been putting out swill for years. Budwater has recently done the unthinkable in adding citrus flavors to their so-called beer. This buyout is a great thing. The Europeans can help remind Americans about what beermaking is all about! As a beer drinker, the big American breweries have lost their edge to Microbrews like Great Lakes and European beers like Becks and Stella. Bud has always produced water, and have recently added citrus fruit to their beer. Give me a break. The Europeans can teach us once again what good beer is.By Beer Thinker

Bud deserves this fate after ruining Rolling Rock, one of the only drinkable American Pilsners. Taking RR out of Latrobe, pumping up the price and destroying the taste in order to market the cool green bottles was beer business at its worst, and I can only hope that the InBev deal does the same to “the Famous Budweiser Beer…”By Beer Thinker

A better headline would be “Brazilian-Belgian company buying Bud.” InBev is the result of an aggressive Brazilian company taking over sleepy a sleepy Belgian brewer with roots as a monestary. Now, they have netted Busch.By Lew

InBev has already said they’re not going to change a thing about the recipes Anheuser-Busch uses. I don’t think it’s an issue.By St Louis Fan

This is a HORRIBLE thing. InBev is using borrowed money to buy Anheuser-Busch. In order to pay back these loans, InBev will sell off things like Busch Gardens, Sea World, Grant’s Farm, and The Clidesdale Horses. The flinathropic work that Anheuser-Busch is known for around the St. Louis area will cease to exist. Anheuser-Busch sponsorship of sports teams, hospital events, charitable organizations and the like will no longer happen. All of this because Warren Buffet - the largest stock holder of Anheuser-Busch - and the other stock holders, decided to SELL OUT AMERICA for $70 a share. That is all it took. It’s all about GREED. Forget about tradition; forget about pride; forget about the soul of the country. It’s all about the green. The people of St. Louis led a valient fight to stop the sale. If anyone is to blame it is the greedy stock holders…thank you Mr. Buffet for leading the way.By victor mickunas

Hmmm, would I rather drink a Belgian beer or a Budweiser? Budweiser the beer won’t change at all with this transaction. Positives? Anheuser Busch has an incredible network for distributing products in the US. Eagle, a local Bud distributor already delivers Becks, Stella, Grolsch, Bass, Rolling Rock, etc. Hopefully those Bud trucks will start delivering even more tasty non-Bud products in the future as a result of this InBev acquisition?
