Don’t forget Mom

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 11. I found some fun Mother’s Day “facts” on wikipedia.org, including some of the holidays ancestors: • “Mothering Sunday” in the UK and Ireland is on the fourth Sunday of Lent. It was originally a time when Catholics were supposed to travel to attend Mass in their “Mother Church” (the regional cathedral) rather than in their local parish. By the Reformation, it had changed into an occasion for children to visit parents. • “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” organized by Anna Jarvis’s mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis to improve sanitation and health in the area. • The “Mother’s Day” anti-war observances founded by Julia Ward Howe in 1872. What we now know as Mother’s Day orginated from the efforts of Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honor her mother, Ann, who was active in Mother’s Day campaigns for peace and worker’s safety and health since the end of American Civil War.

Waynesville book swap

In an effort to help students remember what they learned over the past school year, Wayne Local Schools is holding a summer book swap all this week. According to the district newsletter, research has shown that over a 6-year period, cumulative summertime lag can leave a student nearly two years behind in reading achievement skills. Students can donate their books by bringing them to school. Other books can be donated by contacting Krista Muterspaw of the Waynesville Literacy Team.

PantherTurf field gets green light

A group of Little Miami Local School District parents have launched an ambitious project to raise money for the renovation of the high school stadium. Little Miami could see the first phase - installation of an artificial turf on the high school’s football field - as early as this fall, according to Little Miami officials. The school board Thursday night approved a $720,000 budget for the project, allowing the district to go out for bid. The contract will be awarded may 26, allowing construction to begin shortly thereafter, with the goal of having the field ready to use for the fall sports season.
