Bertram hired by Northwest
Lebanon City Schools Treasurer Randy Bertram has been hired for the same position in the Northwest Local School district. Bertram sent a letter to the school board and to the media detailing his situation. It reads: I eagerly anticipate starting my new position as the Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer for Northwest Local Schools on August 1, 2008. My family and I look forward to relocating to Cincinnati and becoming a part of the community. As long time resident’s of Waynesville, we feel connected to the area and we are pleased to be staying in southwest Ohio. As I leave Lebanon City School District I want to commend the Board, district staff and community for stepping up and helping this excellent school district overcome some of the most difficult financial times it has seen. I am proud to say that the district has been restored to financial stability and its’ integrity is once again strong and vibrant. With a slow economy and unsettled state funding, the community needs to understand that there are still challenges and needs that are upon the district. Continued work and commitment by the staff and community are of the utmost importance for Lebanon City School’s future. I wish all of you the very best and I will miss this wonderful community and staff. As the Treasurer for Northwest Local Schools I will work diligently with the Board of Education, district staff and the community to plan objectives and clearly reach goals while maintaining accurate and current financial data. I will strive for financial integrity for the district and community.

Jarod’s Law
Warren County Health Dept. officials have started inspecting local schools as required by Jarod’s Law, passed in 2005 and named for Jarod Bennett, a 6-year-old who was killed when a cafeteria table fell on him at Lebanon’s Louisa Wright Elementary in 2003. I spoke with Jarod’s dad, Jim, who said he is hopeful that the law will raise awareness of safety dangers in schools and prevent tragedies. The Bennetts should be commended for their efforts in getting the law passed, especially considering their reasoning for working so hard to do so. So far, only minor violations have been found in Warren County, although some schools in Butler County were not as fortunate, as my colleague Lindsey Hilty wrote recently. Were you affected by this tragedy, or anything related to school safety, that you would like to share? What should school districts be doing to provide safer schools for students?

I think that what happened to Jarod was very sad and iam sorry for what happened to him, but i think that the rule or the law should only be enforced on elementary kids and younger kids not so much high school kidsBy null

There are many dangers in schools, as well as everywhere else. I am a high school student that is beginning to see the effects of this law and, though I appreciate the good intention, I feel that all the regulations are getting out of hand. At a babysitting class at the YMCA I heard about a child who accidentally landed on a pencil and was stabbed through the heart. Should we ban pencils? How about my at least ten pounds heavy (a volume of 3220 cm. squared if you don’t believe me) AP BIO book? If someone accidentally dropped that down the stairs and hit someone else in the head, well… a concussion would be the least of their worries. I’ll grant you, the schools should not have recalled tables propped up all over the place, but are all these regulations really going to solve the problem?By Missy
