Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Lots to like at the farmer’s market

I was thinking about today’s post as I picked up the week’s produce at the West Chester Farmer’s Market.

Have I been spending a lot of time plugging the market, and farmer’s markets in general? Darn right I have.

Each week, it seems, I learn two or three reasons why going local for what produce I can get is economically, environmentally, physically and spiritually better than feeding at the big-box grocer trough, and want to share what I’m learning.

The thing that struck me today is something you could probably find at any good farmer’s market, be it in West Chester Twp, Over-the-Rhine or downtown Hamilton.

It’s all about the people.

When you buy food from the people who personally put the time and effort into growing, baking, canning or making it, you gain a confidence in the product that you just can’t get from the high school kid bagging your stuff at the end of a checkout line. Yes, there are kids (and many adults, thanks to our wonderful economy) who do a great job at Kroger or Meijer, but they can never have that personal pride of ownership that adds an intangible bonus to what you get at the farmer’s market.

Add that to the better taste, freshness and variety you find with locally grown produce, and choosing where to get your greens next week becomes a no-brainer.

I have covered a lot of businesses in this township - I kid you not that a new one opens every five days around here. But I have yet to find one where the old-fashioned personal connections of small-town business are as strong as at a farmer’s market.

So go support your local farmer’s market, wherever you live. Get to know the vendors, get to know what’s in season and who the people are who put their hearts into growing it for you. You may well save a few bucks if you shop smart, and the experience you get in the process is worth far more than any blue- or yellow-tag savings you might miss.
