Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

A sunny-day experiment

With the sun going full-throttle today over West Chester Twp, here’s a little experiment of sorts to try. I suspect many folks, like me, are cranking up the A/C today (can’t blame you; it’s not even noon and it’s already hotter than blazes). Maybe there’s a way to save a little energy using those scorching solar rays.

It’s hot and windy. Sounds like a good combination for using a clothesline instead of the dryer today. Try drying half a load on the line and half in the machine, and check a few things: which one takes more time? Which one takes the most work? Which one leaves clothes freshest. As I live in a condo with a strict rule about hanging clothes on the balcony, I have no idea on this one, but thought it might provide some interest for someone out there.

Here’s one anyone can try. Open your interior doors, and see how much you can accomplish without turning on any lights. For an added challenge (or to make it stick) try unscrewing a couple of light bulbs in areas safely lit by the daytime sun, and see how much (or little) unnatural light you need today.

Finally, if you’re feeling really motivated, why not play with the sun and make a solar cooker? If the forecast holds true, most folks should have a few opportunities to try out this simple gadget over the coming week.
