Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

A Roundabout primer

According to the Butler County Engineer’s Office, there are two new roundabouts coming to the county this summer. The traffic controlling, gas saving road structures are planned for the Lakota Ridge Drive/Eagle Ridge Drive intersection in West Chester Twp. and the Hamilton-Mason Road/Vinnedge Road intersection in Fairfield Twp.

Since these structures aren’t exactly commonplace in the county, the BCEO has published a pamphlet on how to navigate a single-lane roundabout. I picked one up at the West Chester Police station.

The pamphlet includes a link to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s info page on roundabouts. The web page is an excellent resource for info on how to safely use a roundabout, and for why it’s a more efficient, safer traffic control method than a stoplight. Go to it here, then share your thoughts: do you think the roundabouts will help drivers save gas? Will they cut down on fume-spewing traffic? Would you like to see more of them instead of stoplights?

round abouts do save time and gas — it is a fact — and they cut down on the deadly T-Bone crash. And they are fun.

Roundabouts are in Europe/China for centuries. It’d proven to be a great engineering feat to move people smoothly, safely, low maintenance, cut down in air pollution, and naturally fit into the environment. Learn more about it. You will see roundabout is a good thing.
