KMA Fund raising Event

T.G.I. Friday’s will give 20 percent of four days’ sales to the Kings Music Association. The fund raiser take place Monday, July 14 through Thursday, July 17. KMA supporters must obtain a fund raiser flyer or coupon card prior to the event date and dine in for lunch or dinner, or take the food to go.

Friday’s will donate 20 percent of sales those days, with the exception of alcohol sales, tax and gratuities to the group.

The fund raiser benefits the Kings High School marching band. The band is preparing for four to six competitions this season, including the grand nationals in Indianapolis. Last year’s Friday’s fund raiser brought in $500 for the group.

Starting this weekend, you can download a fund raiser flyer from www.kingsmusicassociation.org and show it when you pay the bill.

Mason board meets Thursday

No, you haven’t missed anything in Mason schools. The Mason City Schools board of education did not meet Tuesday, June 24. Instead, the district moved the meeting to Thursday, June 26. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Mason High School, 6100 Mason-Montgomery Road.

On the agenda: Expected board approval of a transfer of about $60,000 from the Ken and Joan Campbell Trust to the newly formed Mason Schools Foundation. The foundation was established last year to provide grant money to the teachers in the district for projects and other activities to promote academic, artistic and athletic excellence in students.

Grant monies will be used for activities that go “above and beyond the scope of the district’s budget and offer unique depth and breadth to our students’ educational experience,” organizers said.

The foundation will also connect alumni and be a place to give back to the district.

I’ll have more on this in Thursday’s Pulse-Journal and on pulsejournal.com.

Kings Local Schools centralized registration

Parents in the Kings Local Schools District now have a centralized location at which to register their children for school. Registration began Tuesday, July 1 at the Kings Education Center, 1797 King Ave. In an anouncement, the district advised parents to “meet with new Central Registrar…Tamy Schnetzer, if you have moved to a new address still within the Kings district or if you are registering a new student to update records. At that time, you will be required to complete a change of address form, show proof of address, sign an affidavit that will be notarized by the registrar to affirm your residency status, and complete a new transportation form.”

In other district news…

The district announced today it will temporarily close its tennis courts for resurfacing and building new courts.

The courts are closed today, June 6, through July 4.

“We’re looking forward to a better court surface for our student athletes and community members, and ask for everyone’s patience until its ready,” said Mike Brannon, the district’s assistant superintendent of operations. There will be a total of 12 tennis courts at the completion of the project.

Get ready for a car wash

I thought I’d take this opportunity to put the community on alert. The Kings High School Jazz Band and Symphonic Band will have a car wash 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14 in the CVS Pharmacy parking lot, 8872 Columbia Road in Landen.

The car wash will help defray the costs of the bands’ trip to perform at Walt Disney World next January. The trip is scheduled for January 20-25, with concerts performed by each of the bands. About 50 kids will attend, so they need the community’s support to fund this experience. Students will participate in clinics to learn how things are done behind the scenes.

Future fundraisers are being planned by the Kings Disney group.

Has Mason CARE gone too far?

If you attended or heard about the Tuesday, May 27 Mason City Schools Board of Education meeting, you know what I’m about to say.

Student ambassador for peace

A number of local students are taking part in this year’s People to People Student Ambassador program. Students from grade school to high school can mix and mingle with students from around the world in the program started by President Dwight Eisenhower to promote peacemaking between everyday citizens.

Mason Middle School student Randy Anderson will go to Ireland, England, France and Belgium with the program this summer. The honor roll student won a $2,000 International Merit Scholarship offered through People to People, but that doesn’t quite cover the $7,000 trip.

Read more about Randy and the ambassador program after the jump!
