Open (enrollment) season

Some local school districts will begin accepting open enrollment applications next month and have sent notices regarding the open enrollment policies for the 2008-09 school year.

From what I’ve heard so far, Carlisle, Madison, Monroe and Middletown boards have voted to allow open enrollment next year, although Madison and Monroe have modified policies that restrict some grade levels.

I’m not sure if some of the other local boards have voted yet. I would expect Franklin and Preble Shawnee to continue open enrollment as in previous years and that Lebanon, Edgewood, Springboro and Valley View would not allow open enrollment as they have in the past.

Open enrollment is just one of Ohio’s school choice options, just like community (charter) schools, home school, career tech schools or private schools. In this weekend’s paper, I’ll be writing about open enrollment and the effect it has on each school district. Even if a district does not allow students from outside to open enroll in, their students can choose to leave for another district that does allow open enrollment.

The subject has become a hot topic in several districts lately, most notably Monroe and Madison, where some residents — and board members — aren’t happy with the policies.

What do you think of open enrollment? Is it something that you would consider using for your children? Or do you think that you should move to the district you want to send your child to?
