Joint meeting features questions on schools

A joint meeting of Middletown schools, city council and Miami University Middletown officials Monday brought some interesting questions from city leaders.

I reported a story in today’s newspaper on a plan for a new Greentree Health Science Academy at the site of Atrium Medical Center and the year-long feasibility study of a scholarship program for Middletown students.

The hour-and-a-half meeting also included a review of the projects that have been put in place since the partnership started, but what I found interesting was the interaction between council and school board members.

The school board asked for city council feedback about their feeling on the district. Miami Middletown Dean Kelly Cowan, who facilitated the meeting, had council members ask questions they would like to have answered, however district officials were not given time to answer the questions.

After the meeting, I asked Superintendent Steve Price if he or a board member would like to answer the questions via e-mail for the newspaper. Price said he would prefer to wait, saying the questions would be answered in full during his September or October state of the schools address.

The questions show a real interest in the schools from council, who each asked about a specific topic. I’ve provided them below:

Bill Becker: Becker said he believes as the schools go, so goes the city. And as the city goes, so go the schools. With that in mind, Becker questioned what he considered one of the most important things: state report cards. Becker asked if district officials felt they were making progress and if the district will reach its goal of being the first urban district to earn the rating “excellent,” the highest rating.

Leslie Ford: At some point, Ford said there was a discussion of the need for sensitivity of teachers’ relations to students of color. With that in mind, she asked if the district had stated any kind of diversity training.

Tony Marconi: Marconi asked two questions: What do you see as the most critical issue facing the district today and will we be able to go back to having discipline in the classroom.

Anita Scott Jones: Jones did not pose any questions, but stated she thought city and school leaders can make the necessary changes together. “One entity cannot change this city,” she said.

Jim Armbruster: Armbruster wanted to know what future plans are in the works for future middle and high school buildings and what is the status of the former Roosevelt school building.

Lawrence P. Mulligan Jr.: Mulligan said he had a list of the successes of the school district, and asked how those could be leveraged into more good things. He also asked how the city could help.

Councilman David Schiavone was absent from the meeting.
