Junior high and preschool: Big decisions

I had another one of those “I can’t believe how big they’re getting” moments when we picked junior high electives for our oldest child and registered our youngest for preschool in the same month.

I feel like the years are whizzing by my head like bullets.

I’m happy to have survived thus far, but worried where the next ricochet might strike.

The electives decision was like a minefield. Yes, it’s my son’s choice, but I nearly fretted myself half to death about it. I want him to enjoy his transition to seventh grade, but at the same time, I want him to take courses that will move him toward success later in life. Is it too early to start obsessing about such things? Maybe not in this age of “helicopter parenting.” Hover, hover, hover.

The preschool decision was MUCH easier. Even though my older kids just had two years pre-K, my 2-year-old will be more than ready when he’s on the cusp of age 3 for the grueling twice-weekly regimen of snacks, craft time and socializing.

Every morning when big brother and sister start out the door for school, there he is tagging along, dragging his backpack and pulling on his coat — wanting desperately to follow them.

“Cool? Cool?” his little voice begs, tears in his eyes.

Then, with a sigh, he remembers my promise.

“(When I’m) Bigger,” he says with quiet resignation.

And I know that day will come much too soon. For me, anyhow.
