Special school election
Special election for Milton-Union schools
When: Tuesday (Feb. 6, 2007)
What: Decrease current 5-year, 17-mill levy — originally passed in 1992 — to a continuous 15 mills as a replacement. The levy would raise $2.5 million annually for operating expenses.
Why: The district forecasts a $2.5 million deficit in the 2009/2010 school year. The district may be eligible for state money as early as 2008 for new school construction. Before that can happen, the operating deficit must be resolved.
Cost: Currently the owner/occupant of a home with an assessed value of $100,000 pays $289.62 under the existing 17-mill levy, which is based on 1992 property assessments. Under the replaced 15 mills, the owner of the same home would pay $459.37 annually, based on current property assessments. That is an increase of $169.75 annually.
Where: Laura village office, Potsdam Missionary Church, West Milton Transfiguration Church and the West Milton Fraternal Order of Eagles.
