Unhappy campers

The city Planning Department has been deluged with phone calls after mailing out over 1,000 notices of property maintenance issues to homeowners.

Folks were less than happy.

“This was the first time ever the city has done a citywide sweep,” said Patrick Titterington, the city’s public service and safety director. “The purpose is to beautify the city and help people keep their property and their property values up.”

Titterington told the City Council last night (Feb. 6, 2007) the city wanted to hear from the property owners by March 31 on their plans to fix the problems, ranging from painting to trash removal to roof repair.

If people need help, Titterington said the city had two programs — a paint voucher program and a garage demolition program — that could be used.

Not everybody got the message.

Mark Cundiff, the city’s planning director, said some callers were concerned the city was asking for immediate compliance.

“All we’re asking is that they call us with their plans. In some cases — given their income — we can help with the purchase of paint and supplies,” he said.

Titterington said the citywide sweep would not be an annual affair.

“It’s never popular,” he said of the city’s action. “But it gives us a chance to let people know we can help in many cases.”

Look Out Courts… you’re about to get some more customers! DOn’t live in that City anymore, but I used to. I put Redwood siding on 3 sides of my house… and the Code people told me I had to paint it or get a Variance. I got the Variance! 5 YEARS later the front of the house needed painting. I didn’t get “a notice”, I got a contempt of Court charge… so I called code enforcement, talked to a Mr. Sweeterman who told me it was no big thing, go into court and plead no contest and the Judge would give me 90 days to paint it. I did, the Judge put me in the Workhouse for 10 days! All the while, Mr. Sweeterman of Code enforcement just stood there to afraid to say anything to the Judge. This is fact folks. The City of Dayton’s Code Enforcement Div DOES NOT remove your name from it’s Offender List even after you’ve reapired the Violation. You MUST get them to sign a paper that YOU must supply saying that the violation is repaired. Dated, Witnessed. Otherwise, if the same violation EVER happens again, then you will also be charged with Contempt of Court (the Court System in Dayton Loves to Up the Charges… they get to charge you more money! Hence they bring more money into themselves!) and really possibly be thrown into incarceration…. for something you did not do. Cause they money doing that too!
