If only …
A couple years ago, Brookville school voters shot down an earned income tax. It was something different, a new way to fund schools.
New didn’t fly.
Though now that the city’s industrial park is attracting tenants, perhaps folks might be having second thoughts. The added 500 or so jobs at Payless and another 60 at North American Nutrition would have made a difference in school finances.
The district has another property tax on the ballot in November. Older voters complain that such taxes aren’t fair for those on fixed income. Legitimate concern.
But the voters had a chance to fix that with an earned income tax. They chose not to.
The city will benefit with its income tax. The schools can’t expect much help. The district will have to put its faith in the voters in November.
