First bow tie in space returns home
NASA astronaut and Ohio State University alum Richard Linnehan presented OSU President E. Gordon Gee with the bow tie that he took aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor earlier this year. Linnehan made the presentation of the “first bow tie in space” on Friday, Sept. 5, during the College of Veterinary Medicine’s annual Alumni Reunion Weekend dinner.
While in space, Endeavor conducted groundbreaking construction efforts at the International Space Station.
The bow tie — a trademark of President Gee — was carried into space by Linnehan as a special favor to the College of Veterinary Medicine. Linnehan, a 1985 graduate of the college, was selected in NASA in 1992, and logged more than 43 days in space as a mission specialist prior to his flight last spring.
