Re-appreciating good movies

Somehow, I’m lately in a re-appreciation/re-viewing movie mode…. I’ve been watching a lot of new stuff, sure, but also have been rewatching some movies that I like that I had kinda let go by…

As I’m writing this, we’re rewatching “Gladiator,” a movie that for some reason — the choppy, fast editing of the combat scenes, I think — I did not like that much when I first saw it. But as it has become a cable standby, and as my family likes it more than I did, I’ve had the chance to rewatch it a lot over the years and have decided my original opinion on it was wrong… It really is a terrific movie, in just about every way. Actually, I should have gone along at first with the fact that Ridley Scott directed it… I almost always like his work… “Blade Runner,” anyone?

The other nite I rewatched “Apocalypto,” Mel Gibson’s end-of-Mayan-civilization action flick from 2006. In fact, it was last night that I was running it, and it was a GREAT thunderstorm flick… It is one of the most violent movies I’ve ever seen, but also one of the best. Truly original and wholly worthwhile. But watch out: it is gruesome; what you might expect from a movie about a culture that cut people’s hearts out. It was good the first time I watched it, and it’s been great each time since.

Another one I recently redid: “The Last King of Scotland,” a retelling of Idi Amin’s horrific regime… Again, hard to watch but totally worth the time spent. It’s a recent fave.

What movie can you watch over and over again, appreciating it more each time? Tell, Tell…
