STATE TRACK & FIELD; Division I results
From Skip Weaver
The Division I state track meet just completed the first day of competition and Middletown’s girls advanced to Saturday’s finals in three of the four events in which they competed.
Dierra Riley ran 12.69 seconds to advance in the 100-meter dash. She also helped lead the Middies 800 relay team (1:41.25) and the 400 relay team (48.28) to the finals. Members of the 800 relay team were Riley, Fabia McDonald, Ayeshia Kimbrough and Chaniqua Corinealdi. The 400 relay team consisted of Riley, Corinealdi, Kimbrough and Latia McKellar.
Riley did not advance in the 200 dash however. She finished seventh in her heat (26.49). Only the top four runners in each heat qualified for finals.
Other area qualifiers are:
Lebanaon’s Bekah Bonny, who ran 15.09 in the 100 hurdles
The Lakota West boys 800 relay team, which ran 1:26.93. Relay members are Rashod McClendon, Bakari Bussey, David Brown and Dwight Phillips.
The Lakota West boys 400 relay team, which ran 42.45. Relay members are Rashod McClendon, Bakari Bussey, David Brown and Dwight Phillips.
The Lebanon boys 400 relay team, which ran 42.26. Relay members are Joe MacCuttcheon, Trey Bonny, Logan Norris and Chase Cochran.
The Hamilton boys 1600 relay team, which ran 3:20.99. Relay members are Kenny Lewis, Nigel McMullen, Denicos Allen and Kenny Veal.
In the only running finals event of the day, the Springboro girls 3200 relay team finished ninth (9:33.8). The relay of Katie Kessler, Alex Mahle, Erin Ford and Carly Hamilton missed being on the podium by a little over three minutes.

STATE TRACK & FIELD: Skip’s taking over….
I’m bushed.
Skip’s out tracking down the final results in Division I, and I’ve knocked out my stories on the Middletown-area kids for today. Time for me to go find our hotel and for Skip to take over the Track Blog reins.
I’ll be back here bright and early to cover Monroe Hornet BRADEN MCMONIGLE’S run …er… JUMP in the Division II high jump competition Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
Watch for Saturday updates on Cincinnati Christian athletes Amanda Rhoden (800-meter run) and brothers Isaiah and Josiah Bragg (3,200-meter run) and Badin two-miler hopeful Adam Gloyeske, too.
Unless a severe sunburn literally frys my buddy Skip, you’ll probably see some D-I updates in the next few hours.
Well, enjoy the rest of your evening. And be glad we haven’t figured out to give you the Smell-O-Blog. I really need a shower.

Mason’s Christin Miller leads off the sixth. She is 1-for-2 with a run scored.

STATE TRACK & FIELD: Trent
“Close” only counts with horseshoes or hand grenades. Oh I suppose if you’re playing Tiddly Winks with manhole covers, that would work too.
Madison’s ALEX TRENT came oh-so-close to advancing on to Saturday’s Division II 400-meter finals. How’s .01 of a second sound?
That’s how close the Mohawk junior came to moving on during Friday’s preliminary heat.
The top-4 finishers in the two heats were the ones who moved on to Saturday’s final. It’s a moot point, but were officials to have picked the eight finalists by their times, Trent would’ve been eighth quickest.
Oh, it gets even more aggravating for Trent.
He was nosed out of fourth place in his heat (by Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Catholic’s Joe Vucic) by 1/100th of a second. Vucic ran a time of 50.38.
Trent finished in 50.39.

State softball: Mason strikes back
Miller led off the top of the fourth with a single and one out later McCall Sheppard singled putting runners at first and third.
Mason’s Katie Wills came to the plate and hit a hard grounder through the legs of the Elyria shortstop to score both Miller and Sheppard.
After 3 1/2, the Pioneers lead 7-2.

State softball: Pioneers play add on
A lead off single by Elyria’s Cynthia Woodard, a bobbled throw and an RBI single by Tess Sito plated another run to make it 3-0.
A walk to Megan Bashak loaded the bases and Bellottie hit a sac fly to center plating another Pioneer run. Sito came around to score on a sac fly. Two more hits and a wild pitch allowed the Pioneers lead to blossom to 7-0 at the end of 3.
Mason’s Christin Miller leads off the top of the fourth.

The Pioneers went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second, but Mason has been unable to get a runner on base and the Comets still trail 2-0 in the middle of the third inning.

STATE TRACK & FIELD: Amburgey 2nd!
Preble Shawnee’s EMILY AMBURGEY finished second in the Division III high jump competition just a few minutes ago.
Amburgey, who needed to clear 4 feet, 10 inches in a rain-soaked jump-off just last week just to qualify for the state meet, leapt a personal best 5 feet, 5 inches to best 14 other jumpers from across the state.
The Southwest Regional was represented quite well, thank you. Anna’s Laura Gehret jumped a state meet record 5-8 1/4 to win, Amburgey was second and Rockford Parkway’s Marian Bevington finished third at 5-4.
“This is just amazing. I feel so blessed,” Amburgey said. “I still can’t believe it. This is incredible.”
Friday’s feat was the Arrows’ second time on the state podium, but her first in Division III. Amburgey had placed seventh at the state finals a year ago, in Division II with a leap of 5-3.

TRACK & FIELD: Pead’s not a Buckeye
Thanks to “Bearcat” for bringing me to light on Isaiah Pead of Columbus Eastmoor.
The man can flat-out fly in the 400-meters and I guess it was just wishful thinking on my part. Isaiah Pead is indeed headed to the University of Cincinnati next fall.
If he plays football like he burns the 400, he’ll be a good one.

STATE TRACK & FIELD; Today’s Division I Schedule
From Skip Weaver Before I begin, I just want to inform everyone this is my very first blog entry. After 16 years in this business, I’m still learning new ways to inform our readership quicker and more efficiently. Amazing! Anyway, I just arrived in Columbus (1:45 p.m.) Friday, June 6 and will begin covering the Division I state track meet in a couple of hours. Just to let everyone know, here is the upcoming schedule for our area athletes during today’s competition. The Springboro girls 3,200-meter relay team will run in the finals of their event at 4:45 p.m. Katie Kessler, Alex Mahle, Erin Ford and Carly Hamilton enter the meet with the seventh fastest time (9:23.83). All other area athletes will compete in preliminary races with the following schedule: 5:15 p.m. - Lebanon’s Bekah Bonny in the 100-meter hurdles 5:35 p.m. - Middletown’s Dierra Riley in the 100 dash 5:45 p.m. - Middletown’s girls 800 relay team 5:55 p.m. - Lakota West’s boys 800 relay team 6:05 p.m. - Middletown’s girls 400 relay team 6:10 p.m. - Lakota West’s and Lebanon’s boys 400 relay teams 6:35 p.m. - Lebanon’s Bekah Bonnny and Maria Rotello in the 300 hurdles 6:55 p.m. - Midddletown’s Dierra Riley in the 200 dash 7:05 p.m. - Hamilton’s Kenny Veal in the 200 dash 7:25 p.m. - Hamilton’s boys 1,600 relay team
Each semifinal heat will qualify the first four places to Saturday’s finals, except for relay events which will qualify the eight fastest times from both heats.
That will conclude Friday’s events. Check back later for more information. And keeep an eye on John Bombatch’s blogs as he is covering our area Division II and III athletes.

STATE TRACK & FIELD: What’s next?
Here’s the tentative schedule for the remaining Middletown-area track and field athletes who are scheduled to compete today:
DIVISION II Boys 3:10 p.m. — 400-meter run preliminary (Madison’s ALEX TRENT) Trent, making his first trip to the state meet, finished third in last week’s regional meet to qualify. His regional time of 50.79 seconds was 13th quickest in today’s 16-man field. Defending state champ and future Ohio State Buckeye Isaiah Pead of Columbus Eastmoor is the favorite.
3:30 p.m. — 300-meter hurdles (Valley View’s JAKE EBY) While Eby’s regional time of 41.65 seconds is 15th quickest in the field, it’s pretty much a wide-open one. The top returning placer from a year ago is Hanoverton United’s Jordan Johnson, who finished fifth back then.
DIVISION III Girls 3:30 p.m. — High Jump (Preble Shawnee’s EMILY AMBURGEY) She earned a spot in the state meet by winning jump off to finish in a tie for third place in the SW Regionals. Her qualifying for state was one of the more emotional moments I’d seen last weekend. Upon clearing the bar to earn her trip to Columbus, the teary eyed Amburgey leapt into her coach’s arms in celebration.
3:30 p.m. — Shot Put (Preble Shawnee’s VALERIE JOHNSON) She finished fourth to make it to Columbus. What I thought was pretty cool about it all was that she qualified for state based on her LAST throw of the day.

STATE TRACK & FIELD: Jessie Rowland
If they were handing out medals for fan support, Valley View’s JESSIE ROWLAND would surely be a state champion.
She had several high school friends in hand-painted T-shirts and a handful of parents on hand to cheer her on during today’s Division II state final round of the girls discus competition.
I missed Jessie’s preliminary round (I was over in Jesse Owens Stadium interviewing Madison pole vaulter Cody Martini at the time), but her opening performance was strong enough to earn her a shot in the state final round.
In the finals, Rowland fired off a throw of 120 feet, 6 inches on her first try. That heave stood up good enough to garner the Spartan senior seventh place in the state.
“It feels good to know that I finished on the podium,” Rowland said. “There’s a lot of really good throwers here, so I feel lucky to be included among them.”
She’s not just included among them. She IS one of them.
Valley View throws coach Lisa Batten said Rowland hasn’t decided whether to pursue women’s basketball or the discus or shot put in college.
“She’s good enough that she could do either one,” Batten said. “I’m really proud of her. She’s worked so hard to get to this point. We love coming to Columbus.”

STATE TRACK & FIELD: Madison field results
Not sure if there’s anybody out there or not, but I wanted to try and relay how the Madison kids fared in the field events this afternoon in Columbus.
CODY MARTINI competed in the Division II boys pole vault and earned a NINTH PLACE finish for his first trip to state.
Martini fell victim to the luck of the draw in regards to his vaulting order. He started out 13th in the 16-man field, and they were doing a process called Alive-5.
What that meant was that they’d start the first five vaulters, and then as each of those first 5 gradually cleared the height in question (or was eliminated) another of the vaulters was added to the rotation.
The intention was to have five vaulters in a steady rotation at all times, so there wouldn’t be a 12-15 jump lull between each competitors’ next vault.
Well, when it came to the competitor’s third height of 13 feet, 4 inches, Martini got caught in a bit of a time jam. By then , he was last in the rotation and he’d missed his second attempt.
While he was back on the sidelines digging through his pole pack for a stiffer pole, another vaulter made an attempt, then officials called Martini’s name as the next vaulter! It was learned later that, had Madison coach Tate Cobb informed officials that Martini had just jumped he would’ve been granted more time.
On the clock and scrambling to get the pole out of its tube, Martini’s routine was thrown out of whack. With less than a minute until he had to jump, Martini fell into the crossbar on his final attempt to end his day.
“I found the right pole on my last jump, but I just wasn’t ready for the attempt,” Martini said. “If I got ninth at state this year, I can’t wait to see what I can do here next year.”
LEWIS SEVENTH IN LONG JUMP It’s a bright, sunny (and hot) day in Columbus, I caught Madison long jumper Adam Lewis as he was walking away from the awards stand in the center of Jesse Owens Stadium. … I could’ve sworn I saw a storm cloud hovering over him!
Lewis was bummed because he didn’t jump his best here at the state meet. He even initially told me that he’d finished eighth. “OH! I was seventh!” he later said, as he glanced at his medal. He said the steady headwind might’ve been a factor.
“It was at 5 mph the entire time,” he said. “It’s still a good feeling to know I finished among the eight best jumpers in the state, though. I’m just disappointed that I didn’t get a better jump.”
Lewis jumped a best of 21 feet, 3 1/2 inches this morning to place seventh. His personal best this season was 21-11. “Yeah, that would’ve been third place today,” he added.

Badin-Wheelersburg: Rams tack on
Corey Van Natta leads off the home sixth with an infield single, but the first base umpire blows the call. First-base coach Ken Brown is livid, but he shows some nice restraint to not get thrown out and to make sure Van Natta doesn’t get throw out.
Nate Jackson follows with a single to right, and Tony Cassano delivers a double just inside the third-base bag to score Jackson. It’s Cassano’s fourth RBI of the day, and it gives Badin a 7-2 lead.
Zach Toerner follows with a walk, then Eric Gerbus flies out to left. Cassano tags up and advances to third on the fly out. Garrett Seger walks to load the bases, but Nate Hubbard grounds into a fielder’s choice.
The Rams take a 7-2 lead to the seventh inning.

Badin-Wheelersburg: Rams three outs away from title game
Spencer Hall leads off the top of the sixth with a single to right, but Badin pitcher Chad Beatty gets Dustin Cook to line out to Josh Gonya in right field.
Jerry Stiers is in to run for Hall. That’s the second time Hall, the designated hitter, has been run for, so his day is done.
Kyle Blevings follows with a sacrifice bunt, a curious call considering the Pirates are down four and down to their final four outs with No. 8 hitter Nick Kemper coming to the plate. Kemper wasn’t even in the starting lineup. He came into the game when Wheelersburg switched pitchers in the third inning. Kemper hits a soft liner to Garrett Seger at short to end the inning.

Badin-Wheelersburg: Rams up 5-0, chase Russell from the mound
Wheelersburg pitcher Jordan Russell gets Scott Staarmann to ground out to begin the bottom of the second inning and then walks No. 9 hitter Josh Gonya.
But Russell gets Corey Van Natta to hit a double play balll right at shortstop Adam Wamsley, but the ball goes between his legs, giving the Rams runners on the corners with one out. The Pirates have three errors in just 1 1/3 innings.
And now make it four as Adam Wamsley is called for catcher’s interference against Nate Jackson, loading the bases for Tony Cassano, who delivers a two-run single to left field to make it 4-0 Badin.
Jackson steals third and Cassano moves up on the throw to third, brining the Wheelersburg infield in, and Zach Toerner lines one just over the head of second baseman Andrew Elliott to make it 5-0.
And that will be the end of the day for Jordan Russell.

Badin-Wheelersburg: Rams escape bases loaded jam unscathed
Brett McKinney strikes out Bryan White on a pitch down. Badin catcher Tony Cassano looks back at the home plate umpire to see if he got the ball clean, and the umpire raises his fist so Cassano doesn’t throw to first. But then the umpires rule the ball did hit the dirt and White is safe at first. Rams coach Rick Kunkel argues, but he’s unsuccessful.
Then the inning gets quirkier. Spencer Hall jogs to first after taking a 2-2 pitch. The Rams lose track of the count, too, and while Hall is being called back to the plate, White steals second. One pitch later, McKinney puts one in the dirt that sends Hall to first on a walk and White to third on a wild pitch, giving Wheelersburg runners on the corner with no outs.
McKinney fans Dustin Cook on a 3-2 pitch, but pinch-runner Zach Brown steals second on the pitch. McKinney then walks Kyle Blevings to load the bases for No. 8 hitter Jordan Russell, the Wheelersburg pitcher.
Russell is unable to help himself, striking out swinging. And McKinney gets out of the inning unscathed with his fourth strikeout of the inning, catching No. 9 hitter Andrew Elliott looking.

Drip, drip, sizzle
If the blog updates stop for awhile, it’s because the sweat dripping off my arms has fried my computer.
We feel like ants underneath a punk kid’s magnifying glass here in the pressbox of this rickety old stadium.
How old? Well, this is where FDR kicked off his presidential bid in 1932, if that tells you anything.
It’s got to be pretty brutal for the Badin Rams down on the field, too, given that they are wearing their black jerseys.
Hopefully we’ll get a breeze before long.
It’s time for the first pitch. I’ll be back — sweat willing — with updates at each half inning break.

Both teams have completed their infield sessions, and the coaches are at home plate going over the ground rules with the umpires.
Player introductions and the national anthem will follow, and then Wheelersburg leadoff hitter Wes Lyon will step in against Badin’s Brett McKinney.
