Girl scouts plant a rain garden

I discovered Saturday that mud can and will suck the boots off your feet if it’s deep and you step in the wrong place.

While I didn’t get a photo of the quarter-inch of muck plastering my Timberlands (thanks to waterproof boots, my socks are still white), I did capture some nifty shots of Girl Scout Troop 40418 and their family and friends planting a rain garden Saturday at Beckett Park.

The plants put in by the scouts and Butler County Storm Water District are intended to improve water infiltration at a low spot in the park. In other words, what would otherwise be a muddy spot after each rain is now a flower bed full of asters, honeysuckle bushes and switchgrass. Rather than pouring into the storm drainage system and contributing to Mill Creek flooding, the runoff will help something pretty grow, and will come out cleaner after it filters through the soil.
