Cheers to the Boy Scouts

I covered a lot of events this weekend.

Friday evening, I watched township officials tap a ceremonial keg to kick off the Beer Barons festival at Muhlhauser Barn. The beer, food, history and music run all weekend, so you still have time to check it out. There’s a gallery posted at pulsejournal.com, to give you a little preview of the event.

I also spent a beautiful Saturday morning shooting photos at the West Chester Farmer’s Market. The gallery is at pulsejournal.com as well, and the market will happen every Saturday through October, so you’ve got plenty of time to sample the local products offered there.

But the event that struck me the most was the Boy Scout Camporee happening at Voice of America Park this weekend. Over 300 scouts and about 50 scout leaders are camped out on the rolling 200-plus acres, taking part in activities rainging from lofting eggs with model rockets to fishing to geocaching in the expansive fields.

I was never a scout as a kid. But seeing the kids, chatting and laughing with none of the wildness or snarky attitude kids get stereotyped with these days, kind of made me wish I had followed my friends who were into that long-storied activity. The adults looked like they were having as much fun as the kids as they rigged tents and fishing poles and chased rockets across the windy field. It’s nice to know that with all the distractions and aggravations of the modern grind, there are still kids - and parents - who can step back and take part in something a little more wholesome.

Photos from the Camporee are posted, again, at pulsejournal.com. Take a look, and support your local scouts.

There are so many events happening in our wonderful community on weekends. Next month the Urban Centre Park (clock tower) is expected to open and groundbreaking for the new library. Everytime I get on my bike, I save money.

From the parent of one Eagle Scout and a second half-way there, I thank you for the kind words about Boy Scouts. Unfortunately there are too many people out there who, out of jealousy or for whatever reason, would rather take a cheap shot at the Boy Scouts of America. Your positive comments are appreciated because it shows you realize and understand the worth of the program for the youth of today. Thanks!

I was a parent slogging in the mud and sleeping through the rain. It made you really appreciate the beautiful weather we ended up with Sunday morning when the hard work really started, cleaning up. The Scouts dug in with as much fun, enthusiasm and teamwork as they did the activities that were fun by design. I am a new Scout parent, but I sure am proud to part of something this wholesome. I appreciated your article and the kind words as well.
