Independence Day thoughts

Fairfield Echo/Liberty Twp. Pulse-Journal reporter Eric Schwartzberg got me thinking about today’s topic with a comment he made in the newsroom two days ago.

What would 7/4/08 be like if, rather than referring to it simply as “Fourth of July,” we went back to calling the holiday “Independence Day” and observed it as such?

Mystery blast in township last night?

I was startled awake last night by the sound of an explosion.

Now I know that the Fourth of July and the seemingly requisite fireworks are only a few days away, but the blast I heard coming from the direction of the Lakota Hills neighborhood was far louder than the fire crackers, bottle rockets or even goose-scaring blank blasts that I often hear this time of year.

So what was it? Was someone playing with oversized fireworks? Was it a garage experiment gone wrong?

I’ll try to mention it again this week, but now’s as good a time as any to provide the following link to a release from the Ohio Department of Commerce on fireworks laws and safety.

The Square wants to be your friend

West Chester Twp. is now on Facebook and Myspace.

The township launched the pages to help spread the word about The Square @ Union Centre and the Thursday After-Hours concert series, which kicked off with the Paul Otten Band last week.

Did you make it to last week’s concert? I got there just before the rain hit, but was impressed nonetheless by the size of the crowd and the quality of the music.

You can link to the pages at the following links:

Slurry issues?

I got a call from a township resident today, expressing concern about a planned road slurrying project in her neighborhood. She said the slurry laid down in other parts of her neighborhood has made the roads rough, unable to be salted by plow trucks and prone to flaking off into gutters or being tracked into homes.

Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone out there have problems with crack slurry used on their roads? Does anyone feel like the treatment helped their roads?

Post away, and let everyone know your thoughts on this.

Boehner talks domestic energy with constituents

I spent part of last night listening to a telephone town hall meeting hosted by U.S. House Minority Leader John Boehner, Ohio congressman and a West Chester Twp. resident.

The topic of conversation was energy: the price of oil, oil imports, nuclear energy and domestic oil drilling all got attention in the Q and A session, and I thought the congressman’s reponses provided insight into both the situation in Washington and his own take on America’s energy crunch.

Officials with Boehner’s officer told me 300 to 350 households phoned in to the conversation. Only a few asked questions; the vast majority listened.

I’m posting some of the questions and answers here, so anyone who didn’t call in to the meeting can have a sense of what went on and what was said.

Take a look, got to Boehner’s web site to learn more about the conversation, then come back here and post a comment with your thoughts.

Thoughts on the Terrence Candidate trial

Yesterday was certainly interesting.

While awaiting the verdict in Terrance Candidate’s trial for kidnapping, robbery and assault, I got a front-row seat for the defendant’s attempted escape.

Thanks to the Butler County Sheriff’s Deputies and the area police officers waiting in the lobby to testify, the incident was resolved lightning fast and with much less drama than it might have had.

Read a recap here.

The incident, coming at the end of a sobering trial, has me thinking about a bigger issue…

Now for something completely different…

Bobcat Company, maker of the eponymous skid-steer loaders seen at construction sites worldwide, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. I learned last week the company is celebrating with a nationwide tour of events.

One of those events is scheduled to happen tomorrow at the Bobcat dealership at the intersection of Muhlhauser and Princeton-Glendale roads in West Chester Twp. From what I’ve been told, the event is complete with product demos, timed skill contests and…

wait for it…
