Health Tip: After Appendectomy

(HealthDay News) -- If you've just had your appendix removed or are soon scheduled for an appendectomy, here are suggestions for post-surgical care, courtesy of the University of Kentucky:

  • Keep the incision site clean and dry to prevent infection.
  • Alert your doctor if you have fever, chills, or redness or increasing pain near the incision site.
  • It is common for the abdominal area to be sore following surgery. You may take an over-the-counter pain reliever, as prescribed by your doctor.
  • You should engage in light exercise such as walking.
  • You should not perform strenuous exercise or lifting heavy objects for a few weeks after surgery.
  • Talk to your doctor about when it is safe for you to resume regular activities and exercise.
