A chemical herbicide spill closed the intersection of Warren Street and Broadway in Lebanon today, Friday, May 9.

Around 11:10 a.m., a 220-gallon barrel of Lumax, a chemical herbicide, fell off a flatbed truck based out of Southwest Landmark that turned east onto Warren Street from Broadway. The barrel hit a car and split open, spilling its contents onto the road, Lebanon fire Capt. Krista Wyatt said. No one was injured.

Lebanon firefighters responded to contain the spill by placing a mixture of sand and and a chemical drying material to absorb the liquid weed killer.

"It's basically a variation of Kitty Litter," Wyatt said.

Employees of Southwest Landmark arrived to clean up the spill. Wyatt said that the chemical does not pose an airborne risk to the public and could be cleaned up without getting into sewers or water lines.

"There won't be any weeds growing out of the road this summer," Wyatt said.

Broadway remains open. Drivers trying to turn onto Warren are being detoured through the 5/3 Bank parking lot.
