HAMILTON — Seventeen-year-old Allyson Dierker had always planned on going to Xavier University after her four years at Badin High School.

"It was small and comfortable," Dierker said.

However, on Tuesday, May 20, she signed up to attend Ohio State University, where she will major in nursing.

"I had no interest in Ohio State," but, she said, after visiting the campus, it felt right.

"I have been underestimated by some over the last four years," Dierker said. "And I decided I was going to step out of the box and prove to others and myself that this is something I can handle — it's not something to fear."

Dierker was among nearly two dozen classmates who participated in Badin's academic signing day. The Top 10 in the Class of 2008 and students who have been tendered $100,000 or more in academic scholarships were honored.

"We recognize students for a lot of things, and deservedly so," said Frank Margello, Badin's principal. "But this is a very valuable day because it's for the students who have focused on their academics. I've said it before and I'll say it again: When you're in school, education is job one."

Aside from Dierker, members of the $100,000 Badin Scholarship Club and their university choices are: Laura Boehm, the University of Cincinnati; Amanda Croswell, Xavier University; Tiffany Dudley, Xavier; Nicholas Fain, the United States Coast Guard Academy; Adam Gloyeske, Indiana-Purdue University; Brad Gloyeske, Indiana-Purdue; Nicholas Heath, the University of Illinois; Nate Jackson, University of Indianapolis; Robert Koch, Miami University; Keith Kollstedt, Centre College; Kathryn Luckhaupt, Saint Louis University; Tricia McCutchan, Case Western Reserve University; Ryan Miller, University of Notre Dame; Andrew Mick, University of Indianapolis; Josh Moran, University of Dayton; Ryan Purcell, Miami ; Celia Rotundo, Miami; Kathleen Rusbacky, UD; Ross Schneider, Rose Hulman Institute; Daniel Strittholt, UC; Elizabeth Sunderhaus, Cedar Crest College; Matthew Vonderhaar, Miami.
