DAYTON — Fifteen area women will become part of a legacy when Mary Scott Nursing Center hosts the 19th annual Legacy Awards Banquet on Monday, April 28, at the Mandalay Banquet Center, 2700 E. River Road, Dayton.

The nursing center has been serving the Dayton community since 1914.

Founded by an African-American widow, it's Dayton's oldest nonprofit nursing home and the first founded by an African-American.

The Legacy Awards honor Miami Valley women who volunteer their time and expertise to help people who are aging, disabled or homeless.

"We recognize outstanding women who have been serving the community for at least five years," said Patricia Cunningham, administrative assistant of the center.

This year's honorees are: Marjorie E. Baker, Carol Bauer, Rosalee Dominick Bradley, Martha M. Brandon, Bernadine Vaughan Burke, Judy Dodge, Meredith Moss Levinson, Phyllis Lovelace, Rev. Jerrie L. Bascome McGill, Charlotte D. McGuire, Nancy C. Mills, Roberta Shackleford, Nancy Jane Sumlin, Jessie Watts and Dayton Mayor Rhine Mclin.

"I feel very honored to have been selected by the Mary Scott board to be one of the Legacy awardees. I served on the board years ago and I know first hand how hard the board works to make this event a memorable occasion for the honorees," said Baker.

"I'm so grateful and proud to be a part of this," she said.

The banquet will be at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling the center at (937) 278-0761. The cost is $50 per ticket or $450 for a table of 10. Sponsor packages are also available.
