If you smooch your pooch, cuddle your cat or hug your hamster on Valentine's Day, you are not alone.

17.2 percent of Valentine's Day celebrators plan to spend money on a pet.
"Valentine's Day is a great time to get creative with gift options," said National Retail Federation President and CEO Tracy Mullin. "Most people agree that it's the thought that counts."
Pet owner Jon Kelhoffer said his family will spend around $200 on their Husky puppy, Dutchess.
"She is a good puppy, and we love her. I can't imagine not getting her something on Valentine's Day. We love her so much," Kelhoffer said. "Dutchess gets in trouble for chewing stuff up, so we'll get her toys she can chew on instead of our furniture. She'll get her nails done after her grooming appointment, too."
What are the best gifts for your pet? Here are a few fun and easy gift ideas:
• If you would like to honor your deceased pet, contribute to your favorite animal shelter or animal rights organization. You'll often receive a personalized thank you letter, photo or a T-shirt from the company in thanks.
• Toys for pets are always fun to give and receive. Cats enjoy catnip, dogs like squeaky toys and hamsters like most cardboard.
• Homemade pet treats will have your pet eating out of the palm of your hand. For recipes for cat treats, visit www.divinerecipes.com/recipes.cfm/cid/20/cat-treats-recipes or for dog treat recipes try gourmetsleuth.com/recipe_dogbiscuit.htm.
• Consider giving your pet a grooming session. Many pet stores offer affordable grooming services as do many independent groomers and pet salons.
• Spend quality time with your pet. Go to the park, play some Frisbee, give your pet a belly-rub and talk to your pet pal. Your pet will feel loved, and you won't feel guilty for neglecting your animal friend during your busy Valentine's Day.
• Prospective pet owners who may be interested in adopting a four-legged friend should consider finding their perfect match this Valentine's Day in a local shelter or rescue organization.
