Locals named to

Ohio University has released its dean's list for the winter 2008 quarter. Students earning this achievement and their majors are Andrew Betsch, sophomore, Tcom/video production; Emily Eaton, senior, acting; Jonathan Hartman, senior, journalism; Alexandra Moning, junior, journalism-newswriting/editing; Bryan Scheffel, senior, industrial technology and Carr Van Anda.

McAbee chosen

Fairfield student Kara McAbee was recently chosen as the WCPO Channel 9 student of the week.

"As a senior at Fairfield High School, Kara is among the top of her class, ranking 13 out of 791 students with a GPA of 4.259. Kara has always taken the most challenging courses available to her and has excelled in all of them. She is an intelligent, driven and exceptional student," Kira Simmons wrote when making the nomination.

Business students attend conference

Fairfield students and staff recently attended the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference in Reno, Nev. Students must earn their attendance at the national conference through competition, first winning at the regional level, then at state, and/or through commendable service.

The National Ambassador Torch Award is the highest honor a chapter member can receive. The Business Academy Chapter of BPA received the Professional Cup at the Ohio State Conference in March for students' outstanding involvement in BPA.

Attending were members of the Senior Business Academy (run by Laurie Mischell): Robert Brickner, National Ambassador Torch Award, National officer candidate campaign manager; Jennifer Burnette, Ohio voting delegate, competing in global marketing team, and first place state trophy winner; Brian Freeman, national Ohio voting delegate, Ambassador Torch Award; Ryan Sapp, Ohio voting delegate, National Ambassador Torch Award, competing in global marketing team as first place state trophy winner; Rebecca Schuler, Ohio voting delegate, National Ambassador Torch Award, competing in global marketing team as first place state trophy winner; Garrett Walt, Ohio state treasurer, Ohio voting delegate, National Ambassador Torch Award, competing in advanced interview skills as third place state trophy winner; Robert Yaptangco, Ohio voting delegate, National Ambassador Torch Award; Meghan Flavin, 2007-08 BPA national officer and graduate of Fairfield High School, presiding at the conference; Amanda Reed, 2006-07 BPA national officer and graduate of Fairfield High School, judging at nationals and assisting our staff and students; Junior Business Academy, Sharon Gore, Charlene Agyemang, Ohio voting delegate; National Ambassador Torch Award; Alexandria Branton, Ohio voting delegate, National Ambassador Torch Award; Jessica Hart, Ohio voting delegate, National Ambassador Torch Award; Joseph Pater, Ohio voting delegate, National Ambassador Torch Award, competing in extemporaneous speech, second place state trophy winner; Morgan Schunn, Ohio voting delegate, National Ambassador Torch Award, Applied Technology; Vicki Witt, Alyssa McQueen, national officer candidate.

Chaperones were Joni Bachelor and Matt Klaber. Administrator guests were Dan Schroer, VP Secondary Workforce, Butler Tech and Paul Waller, Fairfield High School principal.

Local students

Teacher Academy students from the Fairfield/Butler Tech Teacher Academy attended the Ohio Future Educators Association Annual Conference April 18 at the University of Akron. The students attended informative workshops, competed in events, ran for state office and presented a workshop.

The local OFEA chapter placed in the Top 10 in six of the nine competition events. Angela Head took second place in the scrapbook competition and Jennifer Svach took second place in the poetry competition.

Placing in the Top 10 competitions were Alex Stephens, Zach Mullen, Corey James and David Mast in multimedia; Alicia Booker in prepared speech, Brianna Lambert in impromptu speech and Gabrielle Keller in T-shirt. Seven senior students presented a workshop called ?Challenge to Success: Making the Classroom a Place for All,? exploring the needs of students with physical impairments in the classroom. Students who presented were Alicia Booker, Austin Davis, Tyler Swaffar, Tiffany Payne, Meghan Swope, Hannah McWhorter and Stephanie Cole. The team was awarded ?honors chapter? again this year.

Miranda Cohen was elected OFEA Recording Secretary and Sarah Samples was elected OFEA Public Relations secretary.

NFMC announces achievements

The National Federation of Music Clubs has recently announced the achievements of several local performers in competition.

Students of Leah Kay Hogg who received a ?Unanimous Superior? in piano solo were Elizabeth Wourms, Cameron Ridge, Hunter Taylor, Meghan Wourms and Megan Parrella. Receiving a ?Superior? rating were Hannah Meibers, Rosamaria DiCristoforo, Bonnie Meibers, Olivia Ridge, Olivia Owens, Christian Ridge, Erin Waldon and Nathan Lee. Receiving an ?Excellent? rating were Luke Bradshaw, Lauren Beckmeyer, Gabriela DiCristoforo and Hannah Ridge. Meghan Wourms received a ?Unanimous Superior? in Piano Concerto.

Receiving a ?Superior? rating were Olivia Owens and Megan Parrella.

Nathan Leereceived a rating of ?Excellent.?

In the Theory of Musicianship event, receiving a ?Superior? rating in Level 1 were Luke Bradshaw, Bonnie Meibers, Hannah Meibers, Olivia Owens, Hunter Taylor and Elizabeth Wourms. In Level 2, students receiving an ?Excellent? were Lauren Beckmeyer and Olivia Ridge. The student with other honors was Cameron Ridge. In Level 3, Nathan Lee received a ?Superior? rating and other honors went to Meghan Wourms. In Level 4, Christian Ridge received an ?Excellent? rating. In Level 5, other honors went to Hannah Ridge and Erin Waldon. In Level 7, Megan Parrella received an ?Excellent? rating.

Students receiving their 15-point cup in Piano Solo were Rosamaria DiCristoforo, Bonnie Meibers and Christian Ridge; in the Concerto event, Megan Parrella; in the Theory event, Meghan Wourms.

Erin Waldon received a 30-point cup in Piano Solo.

A student of LaVerne Hopper who received a ?Unanimous Superior? rating in Piano Solo was Keyonna Sinclair, and Chelsea Smith received an ?Excellent? rating in Art Song Solo in Jr. III in vocal solo.
