Ohio gas prices lower than U.S. average

Residents may be feeling pain at the pump over record-high gasoline prices, but analysts report Ohio drivers are better off than most lately.

A survey by AAA this week put the average cost for a gallon of regular gas at in Ohio at $3.97, about 10 cents cheaper than the national average of $4.08.

Across Butler and Warren counties, prices averaged $3.85. The price at the new Speedway station on Ohio 4 in Monroe was $3.74, while it was $3.89 at the Speedway on High Street in Hamilton.

But if Ohio is boasting the best price at the pump, that doesn't bode well for the United States, said Harold Wright, a resident of Franklin. "People need to wake up, this country is in bad shape."

The slight drop is not making it any easier for people to fill up, he said.

"And the people who are having a hard time paying this price sure can't afford one of the hybrid cars everyone's pushing," Wright added.

Charles King of Hamilton said the bulk of his driving is his commute to work and driving his two children to sports team practices and games. Even if gas prices are lower right now, he said, it's not enough.

"The new prices have meant me cutting back on the little things, but when you have kids, those are big things."

Living on a monthly Social Security check makes it hard to travel to appointments from Miamisburg to Middletown, said Linda Willis. "I can barely get enough to get to the doctors and back and some for food."

The slight dip gives her some breathing room, but it's just temporary, Willis said. "It's getting hard to make it."

But it's even harder elsewhere. Around the nation, California has the highest regular fuel average at $4.60 per gallon.
