Upscale outlet mall breaks ground
Cincinnati Premium Outlet project slated to bring up to 1,000 jobs
Comment: What stores would you like to see?
Wednesday, June 25, 2008
MONROE — A new outlet center that will bring up to 1,000 jobs and $150 million in retail sales has broken ground in Monroe.
Site construction has begun at 1101 W K Robinson Drive for Cincinnati Premium Outlet, a 400,000-square-foot center which will feature upscale shopping at 120 outlet stores, said Jean Guinup, senior director of marketing for Chelsea Property Group, a division of Simon Property Group, Inc. which is developing the site.
Several stores are in negotiations to move into the site, but Guinup said the company could not release the names.
"There are stores that have shown interest, in negotiations and have signed leases, but since we are not a traditional mall with anchor stores, it makes more sense for us to release the names all at one time," she said.
The site will include a mix of designer groups similar to its other centers, such as Nike Factory Store, Gucci, Coach Factory Store and more, said Michele Rothstein, the company's senior vice president of marketing.
The outlet mall is not the first project considered for the location but is the first to come to fruition, said Monroe Mayor Robert Routson.
Over the years a traditional mall, amusement park, casino and Chrysler manufacturing plant have been pitched for the site, he said.
"It's been a long process and now we are finally on our way," he said.
The location along Interstate 75 and Ohio 63 will bring many travelers from the Dayton and Cincinnati markets looking for a good deal as well as bring new business to nearby attractions like Traders World and Turtle Creek flea markets, Routson said.
"We don't believe the clientele coming to the new outlet mall will compete with the other businesses, but they will bring a lot more foot traffic which should help boost sales across the area," he said.
Construction on Cincinnati Premium Outlets should be completed by summer 2009, Guinup said.
In total, the center is projected to generate more than $150 million in annual sales, 800 to 1,000 full- and part-time jobs with an annual payroll of more than $15 million and property tax revenue of more than $900,000 per year, the company said.
Guinup said a complete list of stores and updates on the official opening of the mall should be available on the developer's Web site by January 2009.

All but a few of you have even addressed the article that we are suppose to be discussing. Stop worrying about the size Hugh’s “you know what” and whether the guy from Ky can spell properly. I’m sure all of you are good people, please don’t be so petty and don’t slander each other, stick to the topic at hand “what type of outlet stores would you like to see”?

I hate the price going up, but seems like time is my problem. If I had more time to shoot the cost would be more of a problem.

Stop already! Be glad something is moving in and not out. Just look at Hamilton as an example. Once they widened Rt. 4, everything that was located in Hamilton moved to Fairfield and now Hamilton couldn’t even GET an outlet mall. Be proud of where you live and where you’re from. Be glad GM didn’t move there. They’d build a place that would close in 3 years anyway. Then you’d have a big white elephant on your hands and no one to move into it. Take the mall and consider yourselves fortunate.

Wow people, do any of you really think your better than anyone else just because you live some place? It’s truly sad when someone asks what stores people would like to see in a mall and it digresses into this. Such a shame. Real problems in the world and we worry about this petty crap. Wake up people, we are all in for some big nasty changes if this country can’t get turned around real soon. Peace to all!

I agree with other posts. We have enough malls with “upscale” stores in this area that have not survived. Now the economy is worse, they have even less of a chance of succeeding. Hence, more empty, ugly buildings. What a waste.

First off, it really saddens me to see so much animosity among area cities. In this time of economic crisis we should all be coming together to support one another for the common good of the people in this region. If you think about it all of these cities are economically intertwined and dependent on one another for resources within each community. Keep in mind that people do not always work, live and spend their money in the same city; therefore spreading out revenue among all the area cities.

Would love to see stores they have in other premium outlets, like BCBG, Armani Exchange, Barney’s New York, Crate & Barrel, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Gucci, Rock & Republic, Prada, J. Crew, Burberry. It would be great to have these designer brands at outlet prices available in this part of the state.

Wow! It amazes me to know that being born and raised in Lemon Township(LeSourdsvile, Amanda & Oneida). I am certainly proud of my Kentucky ancestry - my parents and grandparents were from Kentucky as well as probably most of Middletown/Monroe. The fact that we might have bad grammar and a Southern accent; I honestly cannot remember a bad neighbor who wouldn’t give a helping hand or the shirt off their back for anyone who needed it no matter your race, creed, or religion. Growth is growth!

OK, why exactly are developers being allowed to desecrate more green space when there’s Forest Fair AKA Cincinnati Mills sitting empty and Jeffersonville Outlet Mall already available and in use and how many other malls already around? We really do need another mall like we need another hole in the head. This is just a ploy by developers to earn money, and a ploy by Mason to try to steal tax base from other areas, leaving huge empty older malls as blight for other areas.

Another mall is needed like a hole in the head. Oh, boy - more traffic congestion, too! If anyone is interested - google the “Church of Stop Shopping”. It’s not a real church - but their mission is to get people to rethink their habits. Jobs can be brought to the area without another mindless mall!

SillyMe,
You sound like someone who was born and raised in Monroe, and haven’t quite recovered from it yet. Do yourself a favor and grow up.
I agree with Hugh. 800 jobs at minimum wage isn’t going to be all that great of a benefit. In today’s struggling economy, a single person can’t work a full-time job paying minimum wage and survive. And most of these stores aren’t even going to have that many full-time job, with benefits, opportunities. It’s a respectable job for a teenager.

What’s with all the negative stuff about Middletown and Monroe? If you don’t like them stay out! Most of you have probably never even been to either. You need to get a life if the best thing you have to do is to rag on these two cities. And if I’m not mistaken, the question is what stores would you like to see in this new outlet mall not what do you think of this city. Personally I would like to see a Nike and Levi Strauss store.

Seriously, the horrible grammar of these posts speak for themselves; Monroe and Middletown are both armpits. Do you realize how the entire city of Cincinnati looks at you? Maybe when school levees can get passed and section eight is decreased in the area then perhaps the Miami valley can finally begin to attract white collar businesses. Until then, enjoy your smog infested air and ethnocentric neighbors because nothing is going to change.

yeah Hugh Jordan, because Middletown is just som much better than Monroe, at least Monroe isnt passing all of their kids just so they can meet a quota. And its about time that Monroe is actually getting something, instead of middletown getting everything and not taking care of it, what happened to towne mall? it used to be nice but what happened…its in middletown so its all trash now, its just a place for old ppl to walk around. i cant wait for the new outlet mall to open

It’s in Middletown, on 122, right off the exit. You can’t see it? It’s not “mine” anyway. I don’t live there. Even if I did, that’s the reason they created roads, so you can travel to another one if I so choose. I would prefer not to have it anyway, I enjoy peace and quiet. Which mall is yours? Are they building it for you? Building it in Monroe, with the Monroids is cheap b/c there isn’t anything there. That’s how development works. Doesn’t mean it will be anymore of a respectable toilet.

Your per capita point is valid. Doesn’t make is smart though. Basically, you sacrificed one business for another, when, if the city leaders had any spines, they would have tried to get AK to put it somewhere else in town, and give them a better tax deal or something. But they didn’t because they are idiots and currupt. Once again, brings me back to my point in general. Don’t see any business rushing to come to Middletown. It might be an outlet mall, but hey, it’s a “mall.” How’s your mall?

Per capita, it is well worth it. The coke plant will bring money, Garden Manor won’t. And the 80 jobs will bring in more income tax than the jobs there anyway. Big money is what it’s about, not the number of jobs. Garden Manor will move and they’ll all get jobs again. Win, win.
By Brad
June 25, 2008 3:15 PM | Link to this
Hey MC, you are real smart. It would be an awesome idea to bring in GM. You know, since they are closing plants left and right and show no stability. This isn’t Middletown. I will take the outlet mall over a GM distribution center at this point in time. And Hugh Jordan, let’s see here, how many places are actually considering coming to Middletown? You got a coke plant that will come, and offer 80 jobs, but push 150 plus out easily once Garden manor leaves. That was well worth it.

Yeah, the only place people are losing homes is Middletown. I think it’s nationwide, little to do with Middletucky. Did the Fed ask you today what they should do? You’ve obviously done so much research since you know how the hospital is run. And your study on where people spend dollars just can’t be matched!
They won’t use port-o-lets in Monroe, people just go in the street. Monroids.

Monroe choose a outlet mall over a GM plant. What does that tell you? There’s nothing wrong with an outlet mall but they should have bargained more for the GM plant too. Also, since when does a school system pick and chose what companies come and go. I heard it was a done deal with GM til the schools spoke their mind, which seems like they don’t have one. Small politics small town Same old Same old. But of course that could have all been a rumor in Monroe.

Mall closing, Hospital funded and obviously operated just like the City of Middletown, they surrended to the mere mention of AK and look where it has got you. Families loosing their homes at record rates, everyone going out of town to spend dollars. With all the new construction going on in Monroe, I’m sure they will need some place to set port o lets, I will let them know anywhere in Middletown will be fine.

Monroe an armpit ? Apparently you have not driven through some of the very nice upscale neighboorhoods being build around Monroe. And the fact that they have one of the best school systems and around and some of the most up to date school buildings. This new outlet will bring new tax dollars yes but that will only help the coumminity and yes the outlet will bring traffic (traffic that has been expected and the bridge rebuild and new turn around are all planned for).

Upscale? Monroe is the armpit of the area. Porn stores, strip clubs (closed), rednecks, flea markets, that’s real upscale. They’ll take any amount of revenue, they don’t care how much more of a toilet it makes them. Everyone acts like they’re moving 800 chemical engineeering jobs to the area or something. It’s going to be 800 minimum-wage, no future jobs. Well hopefully it will be upscale enough to keep the white trash who frequent the flea markets from coming into the area.

Monroe mall will be upscale, exactly how Monroe wants there schools to be, like the Mason schools along with Kings and Lakotas. Monroe is all about keeping up with the Jones. Now they will have the chance to really mess up the traffic patterns there also.
