Dance academy sashays into new facility

By Michael D. Pitman

Dancing works better when there is room to groove.

That's why Jo McGill, owner of JCA Dance Academy, decided to move her facility from Factory Drive to Industry Drive in Fairfield that provides her nearly a third more room.

"The kids love it. They just love being able to expand," said McGill, who goes from 1,600 to 2,300 square feet of dance space. "I just wanted a facility that added more room for my dancers. I needed higher ceilings, we have larger groups so we needed a little bit more dance area."

Additionally, there is a larger office area for McGill, which can serve as a space for dancers who need to study during long sessions and a place where teachers can relax, she said.

The new facility is still being renovated, but the majority of the work is set to be completed in time for the summer classes beginning on July 7.

This latest expansion also comes after five years in business, McGill said.

"My philosophy was if I made it my first five years, I was pretty safe in the business," she said.

JCA Dance Academy started as an after-school program in Fairfield for pre-kindergarten to sixth-grade students. McGill has 52 dance students, 22 of whom dance competitively.

McGill's dance instructors includes her daughters, Cari Glancy and Abbie McGill — the C and A in JCA — along with Chelsea Fauver and Brittany Graham, who are assistant teachers. Fauver said the new facility is "100 percent better."

"The old facility was a smaller dance area, two smaller dance areas, and this one ... I love this one," said Fauver, 16, who has been with JCA since the beginning.

Fauver said steps would have to be altered with big groups because dancers would be figuratively, and sometimes literally, stepping on each other.

"It's just easier here," she said.

McGill's daughters have danced since they were little, and the family-oriented atmosphere is important for the success of the academy, they said.
