Part of the YMCA's mission is to "build the spirit, mind and body for all," and National Healthy Kid Day is another opportunity to focus on those Y building blocks.

Fairfield YMCA executive director Bridget Werner has been organizing the Great Miami Valley YMCA's Healthy Kid Day for the past five years, which is held at the East Butler County YMCA on Morris Road in Fairfield Twp.

"It's a community event that's done in each county, and we offer lots of different things during the event," Werner said.

From vision, hearing and other health screenings, to activities to promote a healthy lifestyle, Werner said the event is designed to help children and their families.

"As long as we have sunny weather, it's an awesome day," Werner said.

Between 300 to 500 families will show up to the free event open to the public, Werner said.

This year a family run has been added to the activities, as well as addressing child obesity issues, she said. The event typically features the fire and police departments, inflatable rides and a petting zoo.

Becky Laflin said that, while her two daughters, ages 8 and 5, have learned a healthier lifestyle over the past three years participating in Healthy Kid Day, it's not just for the children.

"It's a fun day to spend with your family," Laflin said.

Healthy Kid Day is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the East Butler County YMCA, 6645 Morris Road. For more information, call (513) 892-9622.
