Fairfield teachers honor Nuxhall
The Fairfield Classroom Teachers Association announced Monday,
May 19, that its 2008 Friend of Education Award would be issued posthumously to Joe Nuxhall.
He's the 23rd winner of the annual award, and the first posthumous honoree.
Nuxhall, the former Cincinnati Reds baseball pitcher and broadcaster, lived in Fairfield and supported the schools.
He founded the Joe Nuxhall Character Education Fund, which is continuing to support a number on on-going projects in the schools and the community.
His son Kim Nuxhall, a teacher in the Fairfield School District, accepted the award for his father at the FCTA's annual dinner on Monday night.
Jarod's Law reveals few violations
The Fairfield City School District is in the midst of its Jarod's Law inspection, but administrators say so far, expenses will be minimal.
East, South and West elementary schools, along with the freshman building, each have about a half-dozen items to fix, including installing additional playground mulch, placing information sheets in classroom and closets with chemicals, placing locks on science cabinets, locking cabinets and desks in all classrooms and removing all items off the floor of closets.
Resident Nick Dadabo spoke to the board about his concern that the stadium will not be in compliance with Jarod's Law, named for Jarod Bennett, a 6-year-old Lebanon boy who died in 2003 when he was struck by a table in a school gym.
