Share your memories of Joe Nuxhall

As city of Hamilton Night and the 64th anniversary of Joe Nuxhall's Major League Baseball debut approaches, we are asking those in the area to share their favorite memories of the Cincinnati Reds former pitcher and broadcaster.

Was it is dedication to helping children in Butler County? Perhaps a particular time at a charity function? Maybe his call of memorable Reds game? Or just maybe conversation with radio partner Marty Brennamann during a game that made you forget — at least for a moment — that you were listening to a baseball game?

Joe Nuxhall was visiting my next door neighbors, Doug & Cindy Krause, 15 years ago. My son who was 5 at the time had just undergone spinal fusion surgery at Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, and was in a full body cast. Cindy mentioned to Joe that my son was recovering at home. Joe said, “Lets go visit the little fella.” Joe spent over an hour talking to my son about baseball, big time wrestling, and anything else a 5 yr old was interested in. Joe was a great man and our hero.

I own the Old Moose Event Center, I had the honor of having a group of students from Rio Grande University create the ONLY Mural of Joe Nuxhall while he was alive. Joe signed the mural on 9/1/07 and of course passed away shortly after that. It was a great priveledge to talk to Joe about his old days of playing baseball when apparently the Moose used to sponsor his team. I have a wonderful piece of artwork in the building that is a continueing reminder of his greatness!

In 2007 the first annual Joe Nuxhall Hope Project Event became a reality! The most inspiring moment of that first Event was at the end of the evening. Throughout the event, Joe never stopped signing autographs or granting photo-ops for those attending, and by the end of the evening, it was obvious the ole left hander was getting very tired. But Joe never stopped until he knew for sure that each and every person attending received their autograph or photo-op…Joe is and will always be my hero!
