Sunday, May 04, 2008
Paul "The Golden Boy" Hornung, the Pigskin keynote speaker for the Pigskin-Roundball Spectacular, is considered by many to be the greatest all-around football player in Notre Dame and Green Bay Packers history.
An All American at Notre Dame, Hornung earned his nickname because of his charismatic personality. He is the only player to win the Heisman Trophy playing for a team with a losing record.
Extras
As a junior halfback at Notre Dame, Hornung finished fourth in the nation in total offense. As a senior, he led the Fighting Irish in passing, rushing, scoring, kickoff and punt returns and punting. He also finished second on the team in interceptions and tackles. Hornung won the Heisman Trophy that year (1956) despite Notre Dame's 2-8 record.
After graduating from Notre Dame with a degree in business, Hornung was the first pick in the 1957 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers. Hornung went on to win four championships, including the franchise's first Super Bowl in January 1967.
Hornung was one of the most versatile players in pro football. He handled the halfback and place-kicking duties for the Packers. He also was considered a superb blocker.
Hornung was a two-time league MVP and set a single-season scoring record (176 points) in just 12 games during the 1960 season. The record stood until 2006, when LaDainian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers totaled 186.
Hornung scored 760 points, gained 3,711 yards rushing and 1,480 yards on pass receptions in his pro career. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986. He also is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
Hornung is now the producer and host of the Paul Hornung Sports Showcase, a national one-hour cable television program on Sports Channel America.
His motto throughout his life has been: "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing."
