BASEBALL

HORNETS ROLLING (Junior varsity): Monroe is having an outstanding season, rolling to 16-1, 8-1 in the Southwestern Buckeye League. The Hornets beat Madison 10-4 behind the pitching of winner Logan Stanger. Offensive leaders were Stephen Kelley (two hits, three RBIs), Kyle Howard (double, two runs, two RBIs), Matt Haddix (double, two runs) and Mark Adkins (two runs, RBI). Geoff Daniels went the distance on the mound in an 8-2 victory over Carlisle. Nick Montoya had three hits and three RBIs, Howard marked two hits and an RBI, and Dustin Annichinni had two hits and two runs. Brad Hunt and Josh Braden were the pitchers in a 17-2 win over Dayton Northridge. Offensive standouts included Haddix (two hits, two RBIs, two runs), Kelley (two hits, double, three RBIs, three runs), Braden (two hits, double, two RBIs), Howard (two hits, two runs) and Montoya (two hits, triple, three runs). The Hornets defeated Landmark Christian 17-13, with Howard getting the win and Montoya the save. Stanger had two hits, two RBIs and three runs, while Daniels and Paul Mercer drove in two runs apiece. Howard added two RBIs and three runs. Monroe swept a doubleheader from Troy Christian. In the 17-0 first game, Braden pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts. Mercer was 2-for-3 with a grand slam and six RBIs, Annichinni had two hits and three RBIs, and Stanger added two hits and two RBIs. In the 16-1 nightcap, Dillon Hyden was the winning pitcher. Directing the offense were Brad Hunt (three hits, triple), Montoya (two hits, three runs), Mercer (two hits, double, three RBIs), Jordan Craycraft (two hits, three runs) and Kelley (two RBIs). The Hornets edged Dixie 5-4, with Howard getting the win and Daniels the save. Hunt doubled, Howard scored twice, and Stanger and Craycraft both had sacrifice RBIs. Montoya went the distance on the mound, striking out eight, in a 4-2 win over Talawanda. Montoya also had three hits and two runs, and Howard added two sacrifice RBIs. Monroe beat Waynesville 4-2 as Stanger went the distance on the hill, striking out seven and walking none. Montoya was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs, and Haddix had a double, a single and three RBIs.
