Kings athletics plans to webcast sporting events

By Steven Matthews

Kings High athletic contests will be online beginning this fall.

The Knights have launched a new web site — www.wkngradio.com — that will broadcast live sporting events via webcast, with Barrett Cohen as the voice of Kings.

"We thought in the computer age webcasting may be the way to go," said Cohen, a Landen resident. "Initially we asked people around the Kings community what they thought about it and we got an overwhelming positive response. It's really something that the parents and families are excited about. We've pretty much hit the ground running."

Two months ago, Cohen — who was a broadcast major at Ohio Northern and has worked for local television stations — and Kings athletic director Matt Koenig discussed purchasing a radio station, but the idea quickly fizzled.

However, they got the ball rolling for webcasting as part of www.localsportsradio.com on June 2, and three weeks later, they unveiled their inaugural show at Putters in Maineville.

"Putters was packed," Cohen said. "It was really neat during the summer months to have that big of a turnout for a coaches show."

And starting at 7 p.m. Aug. 11, a weekly show tabbed "Knight-Talk" will take place at Putters, which is the title sponsor.

"I'm excited about it," Koenig said. "This has really taken off here quickly. It's another way to promote Kings schools, Kings athletics, our kids, our coaches. It's a positive approach to promoting our kids. I think this thing has so much potential to be a good thing for our school district."

Plans are to webcast all home sporting events. The main broadcast team will consist of Cohen, Bob Hinman and executive producer Drew Gilmore, and they will select key games to cover for each sport.

"What we're trying to do is bring a professional-type broadcast for all Kings athletic events," Cohen said. "It's really my goal for people to tune in and not tell much of a difference in talent that they're going to hear from any other stations on the radio.

"We want to get students involved at Kings, as well as alumni, faculty, families. We want to make it a focal point of the community."

WKNG is seeking parents and students to volunteer to broadcast games.
