HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Potent Cowboys offense awaits Rams
Thursday, September 04, 2008
HAMILTON — Things don't get any easier for the 0-2 Badin football team this week.
The Rams travel to Wyoming tonight, Sept. 5, to face a Cowboys team with a young yet potent offense that has put up 48 points and 724 yards in the first two weeks.
"Their quarterback (Kyle Seyfried) is just a sophomore, but he's real athletic, he's tough and he throws a real nice ball," Badin coach Dave Wirth said. "They like to run him a lot, and they have a back (Josh Boggan) who, if he gets a little bit of daylight, can be scary.
"Things haven't changed. Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 we're playing really good football teams."
Wyoming coach Bernie Barre — whose team lost to Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy in the opener before beating Oakwood last week — feels the same way.
"We're facing a typical Hamilton Badin team," Barre said. "They seem to be tough, hard-nosed kids who are aggressive and very sound. They might be the best 0-2 team in Ohio."
Despite the 0-2 record, the Rams still have all of their goals in front of them, namely winning the Greater Catholic League Central Division and qualifying for the playoffs.
"We're not foolish enough every year to walk out and put 'undefeated' on the back of our shirts," Wirth said. "We're a small school that plays an incredibly difficult schedule. Our No. 1 goal every year is to win the GCL, and we have every intent of doing that.
"But we need to get a lot better between now and then."
Wirth stopped short of calling this a must-win game.
"We're not ranking or prioritizing wins," he said. "What we're doing is prioritizing play. We looking for consistent, determined play."
The key tonight will be whether the Badin defense, which has allowed 728 yards and 66 points in two games, can keep Seyfried and the rest of the Cowboys in check.
"They're awfully good," Wirth said. "We're going to have to play really well."
